Kind of on topic - I read this book by Richard Marcinko called Rogue Warrior. Great read, this guy set up Seal Team 6 the US Navy's elite counter terror unit.
He also was tasked to run mock "operations" against US military assets to test their vulnerability. (which may now be needed)
All sounds very interesting, certainly not random and definitely well planned with intimate knowledge of operations. Offender described as "military" but not confirmed, I doubt if it was a bonafide "military" clandestine operation but there is something smelly about this whole scenario.
Any pseudo or para-military type organisation would be able to pull this sort of thing off in our "peace time" semi-operational environment. Indeed any of a number of motorcycle clubs or para-military organisation that I could think of would be more than capable of this type of operation.
The sailor involved was not killed indicates a certain level of control, I am somewhat confused that there was only one reported offender, with the level of planning I would expect others were involved. A dozen small arms are still quite a haul for one person to decamp with.
Was access by sea? Knowing the layout of the base (albeit a few years ago) I can not see someone running out of the front gate carrying a cashe of weapons.
Interesting to see how this one unfolds and more to the point what information/disinformation we a fed by our overtly bias media.

I spent 4 years on Patrol boats, 2 in Darwin , 2 in Sydney.In Darwin, we were along side the main shipping wharf, on the old Attack class boats.[ before the new base was in existence]we shared the wharf with fishing boats. We had an armoury, filled with our personal weapons, & 40/60 ammo for our main weapon. It was secure. We also had a duty watch, of about 5 men. This was from a crew of 19. Every day in harbour. Yeah, that worked, have to add, our duty cycle was 6 weeks out, two in for maintainence , 6 weeks out, one in , all year round, one crew, no relief, on more than one occasion we had to deal with indon. sailors with knives , 9 mm sorted that out. It appears that there has been another heist of firearms in NT. This time it was money and firearms from a gun store, I am sure more details will follow but per my previous post something interesting is going on here? Could both heists be related :confused:
Why does the ABC article keep mentioning HMAS Coonawarra ? I stayed briefly at Coonawarra in the past and it is a land locked communications facility, with Hidden Valley raceway between it and the ocean.
