BBC: Land Rover driven through floods - Irresponsible

Saw this article on BBC, about a bloke driving his Defender through some moderately deep flood waters.

He was driving along a pre-existing road, so it didn't seem ridiculously irresponsible to me. Not like it was a raging torrent or anything.

    5 minute video on link.

BBC News - Welney Land Rover flood driver was 'irresponsible'

A man who drove through deep flood water and posted video footage on YouTube has been condemned by police.

The video, shot from a Land Rover being driven along a flooded stretch of road at Welney, Norfolk, shows water flowing over the vehicle's bonnet.

Norfolk Police said the driver's actions had been "extremely irresponsible and dangerous".

When contacted by the BBC, the driver declined to comment.

The five-minute video, entitled "Ross's Defender Wading Welney", was shot on Tuesday and shows the Land Rover negotiating the A1101 Wash Road, between Delph Bridge and Suspension Bridge.

The road was closed after the River Ouse flooded during recent heavy rains, with water in the area reaching a depth of 1.35m (4.5ft) in places.

I wonder if he walked through first to make sure the road still existed below the flooding?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Guess I'd have to agree with them... wasn't all that long ago when a chap near Newcastle was driving home with his family along a road he knew ...covered in water, not deep. Problem was that water was flowing across the road and had carved a 6 ft deep rut unseen from above. The car plunged into the "invisible" rut ...he and his family were all swept away and drowned... I won't drive through flooded roads (anymore)

    BBC probably drives toyotas.
If that's irresponsible, then most of the water crossings i've done or seen done be veteran drivers who tick all the boxes are pretty irresponsible.
    Would I have done it?
    No.
Would I have done it if I had extended diff breathers?
    You bet I would
    Seriously though.
Looks like they're just covering their arse, a public "do not do this" type message so they can't be accused of saying it's okay.

    Wow. That is quite impressive.

    A few questions:
    1) What brand snorkel? clearly it worked
    2) Would a tarp over the bonnet have helped or not made a difference?
    3) What would you do immediately on getting out of the water to check everything was OK with the car?

    Smart?
At least one vehicle traveling the other way, perhaps he'd seen others come through. Didn't look like the water was flowing all that fast, and he'd been washed away he'd have hung up on the trees beside the road.

    Foolish?
Very, Very deep. Nowhere to go if the vehicle stalled. No chance to turn round and go back.

    The way I see it:
It's slow riverine flooding as opposed to 'flash' flooding.
It's not fast flowing water, so the chances of roads being washed away is fairly low.
If it all turned to crap, he would end up with a waterlogged landie, and himself wet and probably cold.

Would I have done it ? Probably not but then I don't know the alternatives, or how long the water was going to hang around.
