    Question Army Trailers - setup

Ok, ages ago someone told me that some of those trailers the army used had a rover diff under them and that they drove them from the PTO (on a landy rover obviously) to gain 6x6! sounds like a kick arse wicked idea to me.

    The question is:

    Did that ever happen?

All of the trailers I see getting around (online and on the ground) don't have this setup. Has anyone ever seen one? have one?

Yes, there was a Rubery-Owens trialed as a powered trailer behind the British MOD 101's and I am aware of 1 trialed out here by D/\D, but we never went ahead with it, the Brits had a few vehicles on trial but it was never extended, it was in the early 70's, the trials unit was returned to UK I think.

    cheers

ahhh, so it is true.... sort of.

Do you know why they didn't go for the idea?

    ahhh, thanks 87County.

I should have looked for that myself

The roll over bit doesn't sound so cool.... but the hard core articulation and virtually impossible hang ups sounds great.

Has anyone tried making their own?

Yes, some did make it to Australia. I've seen one in civilian hands up close and personal.
I think there is one at Bandianna. A search on this site will reveal pictures but you will have to spend hours searching.
A previous owner of one of my 101's has a prototype 101 and powered trailer. Again, there were pictures on this site.
So, there are a few about.

    Yep. That's a prototype.
I think that one is now owned by a previous owner of one of mine. Or, so I have been told.
