I wouldn't agree with this as a general rule as I think forums are as much of a social thing as they are technical/informative, HOWEVER your concern is valid and I'd support a few select areas of the forums being policed to be a little more on topic. As you say, maybe a technical section that is on topic only. Most sections I think are OK.![]()

Separate out the "Projects and Tutorials" subforum into two forums. "Tutorials forum to hold definitive how-to's, for example, "300tdi Head Gasket" - step by step instructions with photos to go with. It's one of the most useful features of the LR4x4 forums, and considering the considerable experience of people here, is something I've wished was part of these forums for a while now...
hurry up!

I think the wiki idea is a good one. An area of the site that is not like a post board but more of an indexed document where one person can create a tutorial and others can add to it, correct, improve it. No visible discussion, just chapters of instruction and tips that is indexed and reads like a workshop manual.
I mentioned Vbulletin 5 because it has some improved notification and search features already requested in this thread.
If I had to make a choice, I'd choose the pinnacles.
I came across these guidelines in another forum (in part)
"Try and avoid posts which could be dull to other members or replies which don't really add to the topic under discussion."
"Try and keep your replies to topics 'on subject' and avoid disappearing off into randomness."
"Avoid using the forum as a way to send personal messages to other members - unless you think others would be interested in the response"
