Unhappy Call me a cynic, but why did they do that?

So my Dads brand new Honda generator arrived to me in WA all the way from South Melbourne (Generator Store).

Firstly there is engine oil all over the place - in the engine, over the engine, over the spares...
Secondly, after cleaning the geni down for an hour+ I discover a large crack on the front!

The box it came in seems undamaged (although oil soaked from the inside) so hard to understand where the damage came from.

They apparently test each engine before they send them - surely if sending to WA they would then EMPTY the oil out of it??

Anyone else had dealings with The Generator Store in South Melbourne? They certainly seem like good people to deal with in the purchase. I have only sent the email yesterday so not sure what their response to the problem will be.

If they're anything like the van retailer I've been dealing with, they'll deny liability immediately and say it was obviously damaged in transit. Then you'll have to approach the courier and they'll do the same thing. Back and forth you'll go until you get fed up and involve the legal types.
They're all good people retailers when you're buying, their true colours emerge as soon as something goes wrong.
    Good luck anyway.

    Toll Ipec?

They used to deliver our firefighter pumps. Problem was, they would just drop them from the back of the truck. The impact would often crack the block, with no real visible damage to the box.

Apparently they had a high turnover of staff, often filled with prison releases, many of which had little work ethic.

That reminds me of the old joke about the railway guard who noticed that the train was not going to stop at a station where a crate of eggs was to be delivered. So he just threw the crate out as the train sped through.

On the form that he had to complete in response to the complaint about all the eggs being broken, he wrote," When the eggs left my hands, they were all in perfect condition".

Perhaps your delivery firm had the same attitude and used the same excuse.

One of the reasons some companies use telltale indicators on their packaging. Indicators that tell you if they have kept package the right way up or if it has been subjected to socks greater than normal handling would provide. I think that having oil all over the place tells you they turned the package on to its side or upside down, unless they just dropped it and the resulting crack allowed the oil to leak out. It would have to be a little more than a hairline crack for an unpressurised viscous fluid to leak out.

Still not definitive that the sender didn't do the damage. Either way I think if the sender organised the freight then they should sort it out.

    Good luck with it.

Looks like they will sort it out for me. They have paid for transport Co to pick it up to go back to Melbourne.
The chances that we'll see it before Xmas...? Slim at best.

My Honda generator came with no oil in the motor, it was in a plastic bottle and had to be put in the engine before it was fired up. I believe there is a fail safe, that you cant start these genes without a certain level of oil.

A great illustration of why (with expensive things) you should always buy it with the seller arranging freight.
He who pays for the freight is responsible for delivery.
