    Oxfam 100km Trailwalker

    Hi Everyone,
As an out of condition 48 year old, in a moment of insanity, I decided to do the 100km Oxfam trailwalk to help raise money for Oxfam.
This involves a team of 4 walking 100km up and down hills and mountains in under 48 hrs. (We all have to do the 100km together) and it will take place on April 19th-21st next year.
We are aiming to do it in around 26hours, so we will be walking through the night and into the next day without any stops, except for the 20 min stops at each checkpoint.
We are getting stuck into training at the moment and can look forward to many many long hours walking and running all over the place. I have sore legs !

Oxfam are a great charity that helps a lot of people in many areas all over the world. You can read more about what they do on their website
    https://www.oxfam.org.au/about-us/

We have committed to raising $5000 for them by doing this walk and if anyone would like to donate to Oxfam by sponsoring us for this event (Its tax deductable) please click on the following link

Great initiative - work at it and you will do OK

    Hello from Brisbane.

This is a great program and I admire you for doing it.

Mrs S3ute and three other housefraus all in their 50s out of the blue decided to do the Brisbane walk earlier this year. To their credit, they finished with their team intact in a little under 30 hours.

I'm coming on 62 and lost 25 kgs myself since then and also thinking of having a go at it too.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

Good luck with it. My partner is a similar age and finished in about 27 hours. They lost a couple of hours when one team member was injured at about 2am and had to be rescued. Be prepared for some serious blisters and to lose some toe nails!

Sounds like they did well to me!
Give it a go. If you are anything like me you need something to aim for to get yourself fit.

    Hello again.

Yes, that is true - especially the toe nails, although Mrs S3ute came off fairly well. She got hold of some Kiwi hiker's wool which was really good at protecting feet. Only lost one nail and didn't do too badly on the blisters front.

Actually, the older walkers often persisted better than a lot of the younger ones, which might have come down to a mix of better planning and determination.

Age and experience must have a few advantages.....

    Cheers,

Good luck. I did the Sydney one when it used to be Hunters Hill to Brooklyn. I managed 75km before giving up with pretty severe sciatic pain . It was a miserable night with almost constant rain and part of the track through the Nat Park was destroyed which is why they no longer do that route.
Its important to get a good backup crew and ours did a great job by providing hot soup and drinks etc at the checkpoints. the same guys I did it with did it 3 years in a row and later hired a campervan for the support crew which made a big difference when the weather is bad.
back then the UK Gurkha regiment used to finish many hours before anyone else and pretty much ran the whole 100km. They actually started up the Trailwalker event as a training exercise when they were based in Hong Kong in 1981.
    Cheers

    Hello again,

Yes, you are absolutely right. The four elements for success at this particular exercise are determination, planning and preparation, back up and team dynamics. It is a team event where you need to get all 4 members over the line. The back up crew really play a key role to keep the team moving through the course.

    So, everything and everybody counts.

    Cheers,
