    Why am I the bunny???

It has happened again. For the second time inside two months some lowlife in Cyprus has accessed my Master Card account and helped himself. I am now going through the process of getting new card with different numbers. Did this last time but they still found me!!! Last time I was away on holidays, now I am getting ready to go. Wife, who is shopping at the moment, is not very happy with bank cancelled the cards. Now she has to find another way of paying. So BEWARE! Scammers are active it seems around holiday time. And NO, I don't know anyone in Cyprus. NOT HAPPY!! Jim

It happened to a relative of mine when she used a card to give money to a well-known charity - it all was eventually refunded by the bank.

Last I heard it was thought to be a part-time worker on a tourist visa "working" for the charity (they employ heaps of them for short periods apparently) ...

So I guess if this happens you ask yourself where you have used your card and who did you give the additional "security" number to (a lot seem to insist on it now).

The Commbank cards are automatically connected to paypass. I keep mine inside a metal sleeve in wallet. Very thin and light. This mob supposedly from Cyprus are hitting cards all over the world. Should see the threads on line about this. Probably some eastern european mob.

Read a very interesting article about the loopholes in online security by an Aussie who set up a security firm in Silicon Valley which consults to major firms. He basically said everyone is vulnerable. They hire hackers to find the loopholes and then try to plug them. He predicted the next big trend in scamming would be through smartphones, which have far less security than computers. According to him, the scammers basically only need a name to pull together the other information to create a false identity and scam away. Paying cash is sounding better all the time, I reckon.

Not necessarily any safer than an ATM. There is one supermarket around here that is generally accepted to never use card as there is a high incidence of money disappearing shortly after due to skimming devices on the eft machines...

I generally don't use cash. I use paypass, pay wave, whatever each mob want to call it as there is no swiping of cards and my bank has an absolute refund policy of any funds lost as a result of theft of the card and then use with paypass.

Maybe that I being one of the older generation, always pay cash, get pension at my local branch,(I know the look of the ATM face) then pay rent,fuel/gas, the rest is shopping and general duties I know how much I am spending and when to stop,if we want a large ticketed item we save and still pay cash, helps in price haggling.
