Thread: Transporting a car - Alice Springs to Melbourne

Call the car dealers in Alice, they must get cars transported into town, and truck probably has return capacity? At least they should be able to advise who to call.

Been trying that - and am hitting the wall as soon as they find out that the defender has a roof rack, and/or has personal items in the back. Was hoping that someone out there had a similar experience, or could recommend a transport company. Best I've gotten so far is a guy that can bring me as far as Adelaide....

Otherwise try a South Australian freight company that might be heading south empty and can do it as a backload to Adelaide. From there it will be easier to get transport to Melbourne.

Also price the train (not sure how expensive this is).

Another option is to have the parts sent up to you and do the repair in Alice.

Have you considered a container? There must be items sent up via ship and if not then the truck and train options are still there and they will not worry about personal items or roof rack.

No roadside assist, and insurance won't cover it.

The price is pretty prohibitive, and regardless, the size of the vehicle is greater than what they will take on the train from Alice Springs.

The plan is to drop in a new engine from a donor vehicle, so not really feasible. And there isn't a snowballs chance of my vehicle making it under it's own steam.

Going by the regulations, it would have to be towed by a 10 ton vehicle, plus there seems to be a bunch of red tape involved.

Initial phone calls seem to indicate that my only real option is a car transporter, and even then, those options are limited... :/

When our Disco died and got brought back to Alice we went to the transport crowd round behind Suttons. Think it was Northline. Anyway as the car was non-opeartional none of the car carriers would touch it and so Northline stuck it in a container and backloaded it to Melbourne for us at a good price.

Will be checking out the container option first thing in the morning. On a related note, are there any services here that allow you to rent a trailer at Point A, and drop it off at a depot at Point B??

I use door to door car carrying.
Have you thought about taking a trailer from Melbourne to Adelaide and back?
