Yeah it is if you have a snatch block and tree ,better if you have two
is it possible to self recover a vehicle using its own winch?
i'm not talking about a massive rollover, just if it was laid on its side while off roading or something similar
if it is possible, what is the procedure for it be carried out safely?

Thats one of those how long is a piece of string type questions and the limiting factors are typically how much gear you have, how good your anchor points are, how the vehicle is positioned how quickly and cleverly you can rig recovery sets.
Everything is working against you if the vehicle is on its side an electric winch might be good for one good pull depending on the battery type and configuration and a hydraulic/pto one will be nearly useless to you unless you have an auxiliary power unit for it that will function.

...another good reason to carry a hand winch, instead of a vehicle mounted one.

Never forgetting to restrain the casualty so that when it is hopefully, eventually, righted is number 1 on the list of things to do.
