    Toyota or jeep

    Iknow i know.

    here is my situation.

The wife currently drives a 2008GXL prado and wants to upgrade as it is getting at that age to either keep it forever or sell it.

now i susgested we go for a new D4
While the D4 is very nice and a standard one hands down beats the prado there a a couple of thins that made us not buy one.

    1. Price, We went to toyota and we can get a 2012GXL in silver for 60grand but the standard disco came in at about 80grand just a little out of our range.

    2. servicing. toyota have a fixed price service which we can get done as we have a toyota dealer up here. Landrover susprised me with this one as being employed by a Big Hole Pilbara company i was intilted to free servicing for 2 years However there is no dealer for at least 1200KM so not very good for us

So yesterday someone put the jeep idea in my head as they sem to be good value for money on paper?

what equivilent jeep would be a prado and are they like landrover with past isues that haunt the new cars?

Just after some info for tomorrow when we go for a look and a test drive.

oh by the way we are in VIC at the moment and probery buy one over here and get the parents to drive it up to us and have a holiday.

Pity the D4 is out of your budget

I know there are horror stories out there for all cars, but my Toyota is a beauty. 1996 200k and still going.
Parts are reasonable, usually get anywhere.

Jeeps....very nice, especially the new ones, but jeeps are expensive to repair. My son had a 2002 grande and it was a great car both on and off road, but it hurt with parts......

I personally would stick to Toyota, regardless of the horror stories, odds are you will have a reliable and very comfy car that both service and aftermarket parts will be readily available at a reasonable cost......unless you find the extras to go a D4 of course.

    Cheers

We still run a 98 Prado (90 series) as the missus vehicle, and whilst I've spent some money with maintenance (360k) I still don't regret getting the Prado once. Very good family vehicle!

Toyotas "fixed price service" never ends up being the fixed price, from countless reports I've read.

Alot of people seem to have been caught out with that.

Funnily enough, I was also browsing the Jeep website just the other day.

Wrangler Rubicon. Almost everything the Defender should have been.

BTW I meant to say this if you are looking new, compare the Prado to the Pajero. The Pajero stacks up quite well in a lot of areas.

Personally don't waste your time with the Pathfinder or the Jeep (note personal thoughts).

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Exactly what I was thinking. The Pajero is worth having a gander at. In the paper today (Qld) they were rated best value for money. For what it's worth, my brother-in-law has a 2 yo Paj. & seems happy enough. I have a 'Cruiser ute & have no issues but, to me, the Prado is in the group of "Most Overrated Vehicles"

The planned ownership time might be important here from several perspectives.

Long term the Prado 'may' be more reliable than a Jeep but from what I can see on the AJOR Jeep website Jeeps are improving out of sight to what they once were with newer owners reporting big distances on the clock and no problems. I took what I thought may have been a big gamble on this improving reliability factor and bought a new Wrangler in April this year and I did this knowing that I once bought a Cherokee which was the nightmare of nightmares to own. Fingers crossed but no issues so far with the Wrangler.

Given the Jeep three year warranty and that you can also purchase an extended manufacturers warranty for them then this may be a financial "comfort" factor if unsure about reliability and repair costs.

Jeep Grand Cherokee gives you a lot of bang for your buck straight out of the box but over time their resale value will probably not match that of a Prado.

    Good luck with your decision.

Wouldn't the Land rover service deal be available from any licensed, approved Auto maintenace and repairer establishment, esp. in remote areas, Regards Frank.

Apart from the Rubicon, which arguably is the most capable 4X4 sold and I'm near chocking writing this go the Toyota they are reliable and most mechanics have worked on them
