Oregon Proposes Mileage Tax On Fuel Efficient Vehicles

    http://www.statesmanjournal.com/arti...nclick_check=1

Was wondering when this would happen - local governments aren't making enough tax on fuel, so the more you conserve oil, the more you get penalised if this bill goes through....

As a driver of the worlds most environmentally friendly car, the Land Rover Defender* - I would encourage those poor governments to stop funding roads and get people to drive cars that don't need roads.

Thus we can all enjoy the tax savings.

    *
    - Excellent fuel consumption to cargo ratio
    - Very long service life
    - Aluminium construction - infinitely recyclable
    - At one with nature - it doesn't require roads, as roads cause widespread tree felling, animal habitat destruction, animal migratory path disruption, alter water flow & drainage as well as affect water tables.

Let's just drive cross country, enjoy nature and not limit our exerience of the land to one narrow ribbon of tar.

now where is that stirring emoticon?

Maybe it is time to shelve ineficient and perhaps inequitable taxes like fuel tax.

Just a thought, but what about a true road user tax? Per KM?

This way it can be levied against every road user, the normal ones like cars and trucks, but also pushbikes.

Large KM users would pay more encouraging public transport or rail freight, and those 'car hatin, road hoggin' pushbike riders would also contibute. As would biodeisal, electric and hydrogen cars.

Don't ask how it would work, I don't know, I am just throwing it out there.
I suggest that this thread hasn't had many responses due to it being perilously close to a political thread but I would actually like to hear about other methods of taxing blacktop use in order to fund the repairs and expansion of same.

no thanks, I like the tax on fuel Juuuust fine.

    2 reasons.

    1. I have never heard of the plethora of blood suckers knock off a tax to implelement one that costs me less (like GST on fuel, did you know we're paying tax on a tarrif?)

    2. I dont use fuel

I bet they dont levy the tax in accordance with the condition of the road nor will they take into account the number of KM's that get done on private roads off road or on tollways.

I don't think that fuel tax is that inefficient. Yes, it is not a true measure of KMs travelled, because that would mean that all vehicles would have to have consistent fuel economy. It is a very good tax on KMs and efficiency though.

The only true user pays approach would be to use a Big Brother type GPS logger, which automatically logs and bills based on distance travelled.

But would that be truly fair, and recognise the damage (both infrastructure and environmental) caused by larger vehicles? As an example, my two cars - a VW Golf Bluemotion 1.6 TD and a LR D1 3.9 V8. One weighs 1200kg, the other 2.5 tonnes. Ones uses 3.8l/100km, the other 20ish. Which one deserves to pay more?

    2. I dont use fuel. Exactly! But you you do use the roads and bridges.

I can see a day when things will have to change. Just when is the question.

BTW, are you still on hols or google surfing from work?

We all pay tax, so why a Road User rate based tax?

Everyone pays tax, not everyone uses everything that taxes pay for, but the net effect is a degree of equity.

For example not everyone uses health care to the same degree, or pensions, or air space control, or public housing or Policing. At various stages we use various services to various degrees. We would not always be able to afford the service we want, if it was a user pays system - such as healthcare.

Even though I jest about no roads, I realise everyday I drive on millions of dollars worth of roads, more than my lifetimes tax bill would pay for. But I think the "user pays" notion is just a justification for dividing the tax payer base into small cohorts and then ripping them off.

Im still on holidays, back home briefly to change modes of transport before doing the north leg of my break and to pick up/drop off some stuff.

For the record Im entirely cool with them canning the road taxes, the stamp duty on vehicles, the rego fees the lot so long as they also stop all spending on roads and waste of money project that relate to the road infrastructure that mean people in the cities that want billiard smooth asphalt for their lowered micro cars have to travel the kinds of distances I do on the kind of roads (or non roads) that I have to travel on.
