I think the best way is to sell with rego and when they get back to SA and get it under there name send the plates back and cash it in then.....
Hi Everyone,
I have someone interested in my Disco from SA. When they come to transfer the vehicle into their name, what happens to the remaining 6 months rego left on it in Victoria? Is it forfeited or do I get a surprise refund in the mail?
I'm offering to cancel the rego to make the price cheaper but I reckon that would cause them some issues back in SA trying to register it again. VicRoads make it hard.
Anyone in the 'know' please?
Thanks,

No issues.
Get a Non reg vehicle permit.
Drive to SA.
Police check, and rego.... Easy as.
Don't it twice
Thanks for the advice. They're flying in tomorrow to collect the Disco and as VicRoads isn't open on a Sunday, I'll let them keep the plates for 7 days so she can transfer ownership and send the plates back.
Thanks again,
Peter

I thought that when you sold a vehicle in Vic without a roadworthy it was automatically no longer registered and likewise if you sold the vehicle to someone with an out of Vic address the vehicle is automatically unregistered so they will be driving an unregistered vehicle.
If correct you will need to date the sale to after they get back to SA and you will need to come to some arrangement with them for any traffic fines etc.

Thanks Garry. Yes you are correct, its not quite kosher. I'll have them sign receipts including time date they are taking the vehicle for infringement purposes.

I had this issue when I bought my RRS from Melbourne - the used car yard would not sell it registered or with plates because I was from interstate (Canberra). However I found getting a Vic drive permit very easy and cheap. I did the whole lot over the internet before hand and they emailed me the permit within about 10 mins of making the application and paying online - it is a shame your buyers did not do this yesterday as it would have saved you a bit of mucking around.

Legally if a vehicle is registered it either must come with an RWC or sold without plates, but we all work around if it means getting a sale.

I sold a prado a few years back to a guy in SA and was told by vicroads
By law I am supposed to cancel the (Vic) rego take the plates off and sell it unregistered, new owner obtains a permit to get it home and reregisters it in SA
What I did was
Sold it to him as is No RWC (Vic RWC useless in SA anyway) with plates registered in Vic, he then done what was needed and mailed me the plates back a week later.
He kept unused portion of Vic rego
I had no intension of cancelling the rego as to help him out a bit I met him halfway at Horsham to view the car, If I did it by the book and he said Nah dont like it ""Sorry"", I'm stuck with an unregistered headache.
A bit risky ""Yes"" but thankfully worked out ok.

I have bought several Rangies from VIC and driven them back to SA.
Last one was in 2008, so unless anything has changed since then.....
Wrote up a dovument advising car ownership had changed with date and time, and agree;d to send the plates back within a month.
Legally as long s its registered interstate to anyone you have 30 days to put it over the pits and register it here in SA, just if you get a ticket it goes to whoever its registered to interstate, hence the sale document with date and time to cover the selling person.
Its in the interest of the selling person to get the plates back ASAP so their refund is that bit bigger for the out standing rego.
Or you can be mean, take the plates, and make the buyer get permits......![]()
