Thread: Things to see Ballina to Pt macquarie

Hi,

I've spent a fair bit of time in the area (my mum grew up in Nambucca). It really depends what you want to see. The beaches can be good but often at this time of the year they are also full of people and places to stay are limited.

Do you fish? I've had some great experiences fishing around Yamba.. but I have not been back there for a long time.

If I was doing that trip I would do Nambucca Heads, the New England National Park (which is not on the coast). South West Rocks then Port Macquarie... If you want to avoid the beaches then head inland and enjoy some of the rainforest/sub tropical forests along the east coast.. loads of places to camp with swimming holes in the rivers/dams that can be great to cool down.. However it's been really dry and a heat wave is expected... if not already there.

I've always loved Bellingen for coffee and good food, (there's a wood fired bakery tucked down an alleyway beside the pub in the mains street. Fantastic breads, pies, etc)
The turnoff is a little south of Coffs, and if you have time you can always continue the drive up the escarpment to Dorrigo for a huge change in scenery.

Yep, a truckie friend told us to check out Bellington-Dorrigo area, so had that planned.

Might just base ourselves around Coffs for a few days and see what we can find.

you could always go to the folk museum at Wauchope, it has functioning ie working blacksmiths, and bullockteams which still work and all the other historicasl stuff you expect at a place like that, but its more laid back than some of the others it did have a steam powered sawmill, which is there to see but may not be working.

I can recommend an excellent cheap campsite (abt. $10 per night) at Glenreagh - on the Orara Way, halfway between Grafton & Coffs. It's where we held the AULRO Cross Border Gathering last October. You could set up there for a few days and do a nice run through the forests to Dorrigo and return via Bellingen and Coffs - would be a nice days drive with plenty of variety.

Pretty busy this time of year but Crescent Head is a magnificent area to stay around, heaps of camping spots great surf and water sports.
