    time dating a series 11

can I time-date a series11? I'm thinking of buying one made specifically in March 1962 for a special project.

In what way do you wish to time date it? if it is an imported vehicle aka RHD Export, then you may be able to get a dating certificate (for a Fee)from UK, if it was an Australian assembled vehicle that would be much harder, some records exist in NSW those sold through a particular dealer, but most of the Leyland Aust records were scrapped to my knowledge when they closed up shop in Aust in 82.

Your other option is to look at original electrical equipment, all are dated. The best ones to look at are speedo and cluster or the regulator on the firewall. Starter motors are often exchanged so date not always reliable. Glass is also another option if you can be sure it hasn't been swapped.

BTW you are looking for a Series IIa there were no 62 model SII, although they were still being sold as new.

I can tell you that a note on the Grenville Motors books list Febuary production of CKD 109 included 253000169a through 24300174a and that March 62 builds sold in NSW included 25300265a through 25300540a. (25300541a is listed on a page marked April 62)

There is another production comment in the 88" wheelbase book: "No Model 88 in March 62" so if you're looking for an 88" you will have to find a UK import.

You could get yourself a Heritage Certificate from the UK, but this will be chassis only as LR / Leyland were never that good at retaining records of engine / body numbers - particularly of CKDs.

As stated above, a very early '253' chassis number will net you an early (CKD) S2a, if you can find one

for $8 bucks you can get a date from the heritage mob in england

Archive Services :: Archive Research Services - BMIHT Archive Services

ask what date your vehicle rolled off the assembly line

they tell you the date ckd chassis etc left the plant if it wasn't fully assembled over there so is money worth spending either way.

If you are looking for a LWB then the chassis No will start with 253 if SWB it will be 243.

The Series 2 chassis No's were 153 LWB or 143

Most 1962 vehicles would have been 2a's but there may have been the odd S2 models in country dealers.

All CKD (Australian Assembled) vehicles will have a PMC Ltd plate fixed to the inside if the firewall just above the gearbox, screwed on, it is about 25mm X 25mm or the holes where it was, it will have the body number stamped on it.

A note on heritage certificates from the UK, for CKD they will only tell you a date when the kits of 6 vehicles were sent to the UK port for shipping. Each CKD kit was made up of multiple large crates. One crate will have six chassis, another may have six gearboxes etc. When they arrive at the destination (Sydney for Australian CKD production after 1956) they will be stored prior to assembly, and they may not be assembled in consecutive number order. Pressed Metals Corporation (PMC) in Enfield also pressed some panels, the wheels were Australian made by Rubery Owen and Kemsley (Australia)*, lamps made by Lucas Australia, tyres and batteries were Australian, diffs and axles were at times Australian production, so the UK dispatch certificate for CKD is only partly correct. In fact in later production chassis were also Australian fabricated.

In 1962 the manufacturer was the Rover Co. Ltd. British Leyland didn't happen till the late 1960s and the company Land Rover PLC IIRC not until 1978.

    * ROK Australia, later became Rubery Owen Holdings who made ROH wheels.
