I havn't but no reason you couldn't.
The bonus of a 4x4 is to get to the out of the way spots on the way around.
A quick search found this as the first car to do it...

The couple who bought my old mini moke did it about 25 years ago.
Don
More than once.
Well, the first time was as a passenger in my Dad's Austin Freeway Station Wagon.
I have since done it myself in an EH Holden wagon - even went up to the Cape. Makes me laugh some of the stories I read in a certain 4WD Magazine telling you about all the mods you MUST make to your 4wd to get up there. The vehicle that travelled up there with me was a VW Kombi.![]()
Cheers .........

X2,
Kombis have been everywhere in Australia. Beetles too. - Both with lots of ground clearance and relatively light weight.
-Long before "real" 4WD's were invented.... - You know, the ones with snorkels, big fat tyres, shovels, jerrycans, roof cages and high-lift jacks bolted all over them...
George Winton who owned the Mildura Dealership for Volkswagen in the early years of their life is reputed to have driven one accross the Murray River at Mildura. So in saying that I reckon they would have easily undertook a round Australia trip. After all, how many four wheel drives that traverse Australia actually engage low range or even engage 4x4!

I have only done half of australia in a 2x4 hilux it was great as it had a bit of clearance so I could still go on some tracks that most cars couldnt
So a lightweight 2x4 fitted with a winch for the less demanding spots might be ok. ( the winch just in case)
