The Fraser Island light rail option was pursued and I imagine still is by Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO).
I first heard of it about 10 years ago but the link says they first looked into it in 1974.

I don't know what the Govt has ever thought about the plan but this group must have got some decent funding from somewhere. A GHD study wouldn't have been cheap.
