You are one lucky man, mike ie. This illustrates once again why I tell everyone who has a dead vehicle they need to get to me, get a tilt tray tow truck to do it for you, and don't mess with a hire trailer. Most car trailers lack the proper break away brakes to legally tow anything heavier than about 1400kg, and as you have found out maintenance may be inadequate to safely do even that.

Be aware thay any complaint to an authority about the condition of the trailer will also include your overloading!

I hope your good luck charm holds out for the next installment of your saga....

I know - that's why I'm not arguing so much, will chuck a cheap tyre on it and will give it back and explain the situation, rather than taking the "**** you" approach. But I can also see the potential for this to get nasty pretty quickly, and wanted to have an idea of where I stood before I returned it.

After this, I would tend to agree, and I'm usually the "do-it-yourself" kinda guy. BEar in mind I was doing 45-50kph (had just pulled out of the service station) - a buy blazed by me pulling 100 about twenty minutes later, with a similar car trailer, similarly laden....

Glad to see you made it 'home' OK.

May not be relevant but amongst all the excitement it's worth remembering that parts of the 'South Eastern Freeway', 'Mulgrave Freeway' or whatever it's called now is a toll road, so unless you had an e-tag the vehicle owner is liable for the cost. Fortunately day passes can be got 'after the event' if this is the case.

Waiting for 'The Next Exciting Installment' ..............................

Yep, know exactly where it happened. I'm not going planning on suing them for everything they own or anything, I just want to have a reasonable argument should things take a turn towards "buyer beware, you have to pay for all repairs, etc etc...." Vern runs his business in this area - I don't plan on creating drama over a $60 tyre....

With any hire trailer, punctures at your cost, unfortunately, same deal when you hired a camper to drive to vic

If the wheel bearing is flogged I'd take it back and explain the story, just try to get him not her

Do as you please, so long as you never mentioned my name.

Keep in mind, you did want the cheapest trailer you could find, now you can't expect back up from a national company when you hire a cheap trailer from a pub

When I took it it looked to have good lt tyres and bearings weren't loose

    Something not mentioned so far..........

How much did the load weigh?

A lot of Tandem car trailers are only legal for about 12 or 1300 kg and a Deefer is what? 2000 kg give or take?

And the load or overload is the responsibility of the Hirer as is checking the gross and tare capacities usually found on a plate on the draw bar.

The positives are that the thing had light truck tyres to begin with AND that Mikes Deefer had no busted glass after the transport leg (A not uncommon occurrence).

    As for the Fillum aspect?

Im sure a Tynong connection can be exploited as its been an interesting place over the years not to mention Nar Nar Goon......... (Brown undies moment aside ofcourse)

Oh, Id replace the tyre with a second hand one and repack the bearing.
Return it and let em know what you have done suggesting they check the rest and chalk it up to experience, its honestly not worth the time to jump up and down over something that's arguably a 50/50 liability with only a small chance of a positive outcome.

Yep, I appreciate that - which is why I've just come back form the tyre shop with a new tyre on the rim.

Do as you please, so long as you never mentioned my name.
    No names mentioned, needn't worry.

Yep, I appreciate that, but regardless of who you are, if you're taking $80 from someone to lend them a trailer to take on a public road, then you have the responsibility to ensure that it's roadworthy. It's not like I was borrowing it from a mate. And if that bearing has seen grease in the last three years, I'd be very surprised....

Bit dry. I know he paid another fella to fix it up to hire, so it may come as a surprise to the owner aswell
