Reading an interesting book
By Ion Idriess called Back O' Cairns.
Beginning in early days before Cairns and those places came to be.
What a fascinating and beautiful area it must have been.
Completley wrecked now tho, like everywhere else.
Anyway, he talks about the struggles of the families and briefly mentions the little kids kneeling down by their beds at night and saying their prayers !!!
Blimey, that brought back forgotten memories. When we were little kids living on the farm we also used to say our prayers before bed. God bless Nan and Pop God bless Mum and Aunty Diane God bless Honky and David and Billy and God bless my friend Janet who lets me watch her pee.
I had forgotten, thanks Ion.
Did any of you folk say your prayers like we did in those days ?
I wonder when kids stopped doing that ?
We wearn't church goers or anything, in fact I dont think Horsley Park even had a church ?
What it did have was an annual show. Great time, we used to look forward to it for days ahead. We didn't have much money but we always managed some fairy floss and a turn on the rides. I loved the horses.
I guess you could say that most of our prayers were answered in those days.
I wonder if they still hold an annual show there ? Probably not.
Cheers.
Robert.

Ion Idriess is a great writer.
Last year I dug out one of my late dad's old books and it was a Leather bound collection of Ion's works including;
The Desert Column , The Cattle King , Lightning Ridge and The Silver City.
All great reads

one of Jack's in the library
I have a near complete set of Jack's (Ion Idriess) works.
Now if I don't hurry up and finish the last half of that set, I will be quite happy just reading the first one, over and over and over again.
My favourite is "Drums of Mer".

If anyone is interested in a different Land Rover book, I'd suggest "They Found Our Engineer, the story of Arthur Goddard". Arthur Goddard was the engineer who worked on the original 1948 Land Rover and now lives in Brisbane.
The book is published in the UK and is quite difficult to obtain in Australia. However, I've been pestering the public library at Carindale and they have acquired a copy. I'd guess that it could be ordered from any Queensland library.

My favourite was 'The Wild White Man of Badu', still got a copy somewhere . The authors name was usually given as Ion L Idriess, probably so you could distinguish from all the other Ion Idriess's out there.
