So that's why I went through my collection of brass fittings and made something up. We haven't used the damn barbecue for years because of this new hose problem, so I figured this would get things going. If you guys reckon it's fine as long as it's gas-tight, then that sounds good.

If pushed you could put a new hose onto the connectors that are on your old hose. Just have to use hose clamps to hold the hose on the connectors.

Make up a squirt bottle of soapy solution and spray the soapy solution onto the joins to check for leaks.

The fitting on the BBQ is a female compression fitting & therefore not suited to the joiner you have attached. It needs to be a tapered thread. The second fitting is correct.- see pictures.
In time & with use, the first join may lose its gas seal, this is something to watch, If I did this, I would periodically check the fitting with soapy water. ( like every time I used it)
Did you use yellow gas tape?. White will break down over time due to the petroleum content in the gas.
I would ditch it & get a hose/regulator with a compression fitting as the original hose was.
I've had 25 years in the LP Gas industry & see most of the things than can go wrong..

Thanks for going to the trouble to mark up the pics. I did put it together that way in the end, and it works well, though I am indeed testing it with soapy water each time, and it is temporary. I have to finish a Range Rover to get to Broome for the proper hoses, and we just couldn't wait that long to barbecue some snags!
