The D2 Td5 auto only locks the torque convertor under specific conditions when descending. It requires low range, 0% throttle and revs above 2000rpm, so only kicks in when the speed is above 9.5km/h which more than what I'd consider to be comfortable for a steep descent. It's mainly designed to work as part of the HDC system to assist slowing the vehicle when road speed is above target speed. The minimum (forward) target speed for HDC is 7kph. For crawling you have "driving through the brakes".

It's a matter of approach in the end. If you choose to disengage brain with the auto you can certainly do that. On the hand there is enough you can fiddle with on the D2 autos to keep you entertained if you choose to "take control".

I wasn't impressed with DSG, I turned down buying a brand new DSG car over a 3 year old 6sp manual version. Change of models, no new manuals in the country, and none being built to order for another 12 months or so.
I found I much prefer a torque converter auto with an aggressive lockup schedule (like the ZF 6sp in the mondeo) over the VW group 6 speed DSG. Which is where ZF is going (and others following) for many years now. 9 speed auto being tested in the Evoque.
IMO DSG type gearboxes will be gone in the future The complexity, space and weight can't compete with planetaries, the efficiency is about the same but the ratio selection and ability to jump gears on the planetaries are much better. DSG can only preselect one ratio and if that's wrong you are in for a big wait.

But I like manual far more. They are always in the gear I chose and stay there until I want the next one.
No hunting on hills.
No producing massive amounts of heat on hills.
No getting gear selection wrong due to power loss at altitude.
No "my gearbox is so hot I can smell it" moments.
None of that runaway toboggan feeling downhill.
Much deeper gearing too.
