wow! you're in for a treat! The route I followed was similar (in reverse) from Kenya to South Africa, but came in from North & West Africa as Ethiopia was unstable. Ethiopia now is a relative dream!

Thanks for that. Just asked the opinion of a SA workmate here who has just come back from Cape Town. She said most of it looked pretty good. Specific comments were:

Your start along the lower west coast should be very beautiful.

Namibia - if you see what looks like a diamond lying on the ground, it probably is. DON'T pick it up as there is a lot of diamond mining and if you get caught with it its jail.

Sudan-Ethiopia- Lot of fighting as Muslims push Christians south. Be very careful.

Notice you're shipping from Egypt. Where to?

Toyotas have taken over in most parts of the world. There are a few Landies knocking around, especially in eastern and southern Africa. Series Land Rovers, early Defenders (and early disco because of similar mechanics?) and Toyotas up to 80 series would be my bet.

The orignal plan was to carry on to Jordan, Syria, Turkey and into Europe.
But Syria is no-go at the moment.

Current plan is to go from Egypt to Lybia and onto Tunisia and ship to Sicily and drive up through Italy.

Backup plan is to ship from Egypt to Turkey (which is what most people have been doing whilst both Syria and Lybia where no-go)

Looks like a good trek mate. The only suggestion I would make is, to come via Zim and see the Mozambican coast. Come via Mutare and head north through Nampula to see Nacala, Ilha de Mocambique ( a World Heritage site), then Pemba and Mocimboa da Praia. You can have a choice then of journeying inland through Niassa Province to Malawi. and then Tanzania, or go direct to Tanzania across the Rovuma river.

The Namibian coast is well worth seeing, as is the sub-tropical to tropical coast of Mozambique.

Just some thoughts. Africa will make you feel more human. Enjoy.
Be known for what you did. Not, for what you bought.

I'm reading 'Cape to Cairo', an account of a 1924 trip from... you've guessed it, cape to Cairo. Chapter VI Bulawayo to Dett starts:

"It took us four months to do 380 miles: it almost broke our hearts ... on some days we would progress 2 miles.."

It was a tad muddy - they used block and tackle to drag themselves through..

    Hope you have more luck!!
