Whe I was growing up in the 80s in country NSW everything except the expensive nightclub shut at midnight, most people just went out at 6:30 - 7:00 and went home when the pub shut. Of course there were still fights etc but there was not the huge amount of violence at 02:00 in the morning that happens now.
As far as I can see the only people that might benefit from late trading might be shift workers but even that could be resolved by a rule that if the pubs want to trade at 07:00 in the morning they have to shut at 8:00pm.
I reckon all that has happened with late trading is that we have encouraged people to not go out until much later and to start drinking at home beforehand. I can't see any social benefit to this.

When in the Navy , in Sydney, there were a couple of pubs in Woolloomooloo that catered for the wharfies shift times, shut at 6 pm, opened at 6 am, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
