Maybe the best approach for Land Rover to take when introducing a new Defender with major changes is to keep the existing one in at least limited production for a while. As I gather Series 3's and Counties were produced concurrently for two years. Possibly relocate the tooling to India. Undoubtedly some customers would prefer to purchase what they know rather than a new model - at least before bugs are ironed out. New and old models could be partly in different sections of the market.
Worth noting that apparently one Defender look alike is still being produced elsewhere. Morattab Pazhan built in Iran. Tooling originally came from Santana in Spain when it superseded what was effectively a Series 4 Land Rover with the PS10. This was more recently replaced with the Iveco Massif. Sales of it fell far short of expectations and with ownership having passed to the government which has large economic problems, factory has been closed down.
