    Anyone been or worked there?

I've been asked to head over and am thinking about it, it's 28on/28off, just wondering if anyone has done similar?

Work people I know go. I'm a driller and one of the rig mechanics goes over 3 weeks on 1 back here. Our fitter has also worked there.

You dont go anywhere, just like mines here. You sleep in security componds and there are guards on 24/7.

Stick with the security and they tell me it's pretty good. You just dont go out even when staying in hotels if you go to town on way in and out.

That's all I know, second hand anyway.

BIL worked at Ok Tedi mine years ago.

Told me once there was a strike. The local workers turned up to form a pick line at the gate, war paint on, armed with spears, bows and arrows. They weren't pretending either, they were really fired up.

Mate of mine considering the same thing now that mining has cooled off somewhat in WA.

G'day, I worked there and lived in PtMoresby for 5 years and survived. If you are staying at a mine site etc its way safer that living in Moresby.

You won't have time for too much socialising when you are 28 days on but the point is you aren't there to socialise and the 28 days will go quick as you will be busy.

The security was OK in the compounds, the food was excellent and the camps are "dry". I stayed at several of the camps when I was there as our company was contracted to do the crew change. Having said that my crew was picked to stay at one of the camps so we could fly out a skeleton crew that were left on site and the rest of the camp was evacuated due to civil unrest, this didn't happen very often but there are no guarantees. I believe the tourist brochures used to say "PNG, land of the unexpected", man were they spot on.

Can I ask who it's with or where the camp is? I might be able to give you more info. Can PM me if you like. It was a hell of an adventure for that time of my life and I'm glad I did it.

    Good luck with your decision.

    Cheers
    Mike

Our future son-in law has just come back from Moro, Where Volvo Trucks Australia sent 6 mechanics to work on the Renault fleet, working on the gas pipeline. 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for 1 month. Hot, wet, living in shipping containers, in a compound [ safe], can't wait to go back. His bank balance is healthier now. The locals liked the Aussies better than the French engineers & Portugese mechanics / workers. It was " Aussie, PNG, same-same. " He says you are too busy to get into trouble. No grog, staff breathalised randomly. [ curiously, no Aussies were] Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Matt, make sure you don't run over any pigs. They are valued more than human life over there.

The more pigs you own the wealthier you are and considered higher in society. They wear feathers in the hair to indicate how many pigs they own. White feather for a white pig, black feather for a black pig. One feather per pig.

Yep, pigs mean something in PNG.

I believe the government is still quite corrupt. Like to look after family members (nepotism).

PNG share there belongings, strong in believing what is yours is mine.

If they don't like you they anonymously smear feces on your place, belongings, motor vehicle, around where you sleep. (Pluck it from their rear and start finger painting). By the way, this means they really don't like you.

    Regards
    Andrew

It's over forty years since I lived there, although I have visited a bit more recently, and have recent contacts. I would not worry too much about working there, although I would not want to live in Moresby. There are some risks you do not have here - air travel is riskier due to weather and terrain, and some diseases are more of a risk, especially malaria (get current advice!), but some risks are probably lower, such as traffic accidents (you will do a lot less driving!).

I tend to agree with 123Rover50 - they were better times.
