Wangaratta double murder: 'Why them?' | The Border Mail
It's been a big week hereLATEST: POLICE have ruled out the death of two people at a Wangaratta home as a murder-suicide.
Detective Sen-Sgt Stephen McIntyre said Wangaratta police had been called about 10pm yesterday to check on a couple who lived in the Great Alpine Road house.
He said there did not appear to be any forced entry to the house and police had ruled out a murder-suicide. It was too early to tell if anything had been stolen from the property.
“It’s a complicated scene, there has been a violent assault take place,” Det. Sen-Sgt McIntyre said.
“We still haven’t identified the deceased at this stage so it would be pretty hard to speculate whether the people who sent us here are related.”
He said a post-mortem would determine when the pair had died but it could have been as early as Sunday. Police have not confirmed whether the deceased are the couple that lived at the property.
Det. Sen-Sgt McIntyre said it was also unclear how the pair was killed but said they had extensive injuries and a firearm may have been used.
The bodies were found in the same room of the house. The crime scene was confined to one section of the house, Det. Sen-Sgt McIntyre said.
“We are looking for someone else involved in this incident, at this stage we don’t know who. Our inquiries are ongoing,” he said.
Police have spoken to neighbours and family members, but Det. Sen-Sgt McIntyre said it had been difficult to contact some relatives as they lived interstate.
Neighbours have told The Border Mail of their shock at this morning’s news, describing the couple that live at the Wangaratta property in glowing terms.
“Why? Why them?” one neighbour said. “I got such a shock (at the news).”

Poor diddums had the Sons of God do a tap dance on him maybe?Son accused of double murder
A MAN charged with murdering his parents in their Wangaratta home yesterday told a court he posed no threat to the community during a failed bail bid.
Ian David Thomas, 35, of Balga, a suburb of Perth, has been charged with two counts of murder. He was denied bail in an out-of-sessions court hearing in Melbourne last night.
Police said Thomas killed his parents, Bill and Pauline Thomas, at their Great Alpine Road home sometime on Sunday or Monday.
Mr and Mrs Thomas, who had been married for more than 35 years, had five children.
Thomas told the court he should be considered for bail because he was not a threat.
“I’m absolutely no threat to anyone’s livelihood whatsoever,” he said.
He said he needed to sort out his property in Western Australia, personal effects in Victoria and speak to people about “what’s occurred and where things are likely to go”.
Thomas sat calmly during the brief hearing, dressed in forensic overalls and with bruising on his face.
He told bail justice Leslie Zimmerman police had stomped on him during the Tuesday arrest.
“I did not resist arrest. Both sides of my head were stomped on,” he said.
Thomas said he had not been in custody before and asked to be held in isolation.
He needed access to a doctor and prescription medication.
Mr Zimmerman said the charges were too severe to grant bail before Thomas appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Police arrested Thomas in Meredith, between Geelong and Ballarat, about 7pm on Tuesday.![]()
