I will probably forget something here, but let's have a go.

Long range tank or jerry cans
    Extra spare tyre/s
    decent water tank
    snorkel
    bull bar
    driving lights
    high lift jack
    UHF radio
    Sat phone
    toolbox and recovery kit

a bonus addition here is a decent stereo (usb/mp3 connectivity etc). It sounds a bit silly, but sometimes hearing some music can really improve your moral in a crappy situation

List 1 for any new 4xer in any vehicle to get you started, it is in order. List 2 is my more D3 specific and or advanced list of the stuff I get the most use out of and am happiest with.

    1. Snatch strap and a couple of rated shackles. The simplest cheapest most effective piece of recovery kit you can get and as long as there is another vehicle close enough it will get you out of 90% of bogs. 2 is even better but learn how to join them properly.
    2. Shovel, as above and complements the above.
    3. Upgraded tyres, a good set of AT's can make a big difference to ability
    4. A good tyre pressure gauge
    5. A first aid kit
    6. A UHF, a good handheld will do make sure it can take an external aerial connection if you want to upgrade and add the antenna.
    7. A bull bar will give a deal of reassurance if you are doing any country touring, but may also require suspension upgrade depending on bar and car.
    8. Good set of Spotties (unless you have a Disco with Bi Xenons) if you intend doing any country night driving.
    9. Maxtrax, specially if you do a lot of beach/sand driving.
    10. Good quality air compressor, I have ARB, I prefer in a box rather than minted but each to their own on this.

For the D3 specifically the things I have used the most and found make the biggest difference. And basically in addition to the above.

    1. Llams, single best enhancement to its already awesome standard electronic capabilities.
    2. Long range tank. Makes a big difference to country touring and towing. Also ensures you can take advantage of cheaper fuel.
    3. Traxide dual battery kit and make sure you put the rear Anderson plug in, it has a million uses.
    3. Rear wheel carrier, need it for the LR tank, but gets spare up to where you can get to it, and also elimates the stupidest design "feature" of the Discovery which is the useless spare wheel winch which fails at the drop of a hat.
    4. Cargo barrier, massively increases load capacity and safety.
    5. Mitch hitch, if you still have the original spare in place it allows you to get to it, it stops the OEM hitch from acting as a plough and increase your departure angle and raises the hitch to a more practical level than the OEM.
    6. Rock sliders give a great deal more confidence in gnarly situations
    7. Roof rack, gives a lot more capacity, is necessary for carrying anything long once you have the cargo barrier in, and allows you to carry muddy and dirty stuff outside the car.
    8. Some kind of satellite communication, phone is ideal but expensive, I have a spot emergency communicator, which is more limited but reassuring to have in an emergency.
    9. fridge
    10. Winch.
