Funny you should say that, I have to ring the neck of my Isuzu to overtake, hell if the overtaking lane is on a hill or there is a stiff headwind, game over before it starts, no choice but to keep left. Any of those 200tdi and later Defenders that "needs its neck rung" easily pull away from me on anything resembling an incline.
A 2.2 litre engined Defender would feel positively sporty compared to a naturally aspirated diesel One Ten.

I'll drive a turboed 3.9D County one of these days...

I have a 2013 2.2 D90 (only got 2500km). I find it "zippy" when empty, overtakes quiet nicely. Not the brutal overtaking power of a comodoor or one of those 3.2L rangers.... but sufficient. What I did find however is when I threw a 2.5T load behind it all of a sudden it got thirsty and a bit slow on takeoff. Once it was up to 100 it was ok to hold it but getting there was a bit slow. I wouldn't mind a bit more balls.

When I say thirsty it went from 10.4L/100 to something like 15L/100!

But now i think of it the 07 3L ranger I had went from 9L/100 to 15ish/100 when towing less.... Ok maybe I should just be happy with that. na, i think MORE POWER! haha.

One of the forum members has a 2013 metallic black(Barolo Black) 110 Defender 2.2ltr 6speed,was with him over the weekend at the Defender Day,he took it to the 65th at Melrose in SA,it is smooth,with elect front windows,air-con that works and it certainly does not lack power,he towed a No 5 trailer kitted out as a camper to SA no problems,if I could afford one I would have one,the metallic black looks so much more up-market than the white trades/govt vehicle it is not funny.

No nothing that neanderthal, just a 3ltr TD5 or TDV6 2.7 would do, not a putrid 2.2ltr transit motor - what are they thinking.

Have you actually driven one? I've done 20,000kms in my 2.2 "putrid transit motor" MY12 D90, with over a quarter of that towing a lightly loaded fully enclosed trailer on open highways in outback WA, and am still surprised by how well it goes. It has a very useful bottom and midrange power package coupled with a 6 speed manual gearbox that makes ringing it out a little futile. The top end is a little flat, but you don't need to go there as it does 110kph with the load easily, including a roof tent on the rack, and will go past 130kph easily for an overtaking manoeuvre. I came from a Nissan Patrol ute with a 6 cylinder 4.2lt Turbo Diesel, so was expecting to be missing some power, but nope - the little 2.2 goes blinking well.

In a 90 i'd expect reasonable performance but in a 110 or 130 , i'd like to see how it copes after 200k+ .

I'm interested as well, I'm thinking about looking around for a used 110 in a couple of years time, can't afford one new, it would be the last vehicle I would ever own, don't need one with "issues ". The TD5 D2 is a great vehicle, but I think down the track there could be an issue with spares. Just my thoughts. Bob
