Statutory write-offs can never again be registered, end of story.

Get a copy of the Written-off Vehicles Manual. You will be surprised how little damage has to be sustained for the vehicle to be declared a write-off.

If you acquire a repairable write-off, you will find your first one to be an interesting experience by the time you get it registered. You need to keep all documents, invoices etc. and be able to show who did the work and their qualifications and competence. Some operations (like straightening motor cycle frames) can only be carried out by certain operators. The people involved are not there to help you, but to ensure the necessary repairs have been properly carried out.

Irrespective of whether you agree with the system or not - the interesting thing is that the rules only apply to insurance write offs - if a vehicle is not insured (or insurance not claimed) and it drowned or wrecked in an accident it can be repaired and put back on the road. I appreciate the latter would be hard to regulate but does highlight the inconsistencies in the policy.
