Thread: Flexible Spare Wheel Ramp

What a great bit of kit. One of the first things I want to do is fit a rear wheel carrier to the 101. Maybe we need to sit down and work something out - it doesn't take much more effort to build 2 rather than 1...

Why not store the spare wheel where it is supposed to go. It seems like a good spot. I do not have the brackets for mine so the spare is stored in the back secured with tie downs but I would prefer it to go in the correct position.

Doh - To answer my own question - you have Michelins and Michelins do not fit in the spare spot - you cannot get it in.

Standard fitment on an Oka. I remember seeing them on new Okas at a 4wd show back in the eighties of nineties.
That unfit person you referred to wasn't me by chance?

Mick, Actually I was thinking of my 38.5 crawlies and my dodgy back. I will downsize tyre eventually but probably still 35's - ish.

Garry, I agree although I am still planning ( dreaming?) of a slide on camper so. Might be easier on the back and always like the idea of 2 spares ( more dreamin?)

It's still a fair effort rolling it up the ladder.
I saw an ADF trailer the other day. One made for the G wagon. It had a small lifting winch/crane mounted on the spare wheel support for lifting the spare wheel down and up to the support. Maybe that sort of thing on a swing away bracket would work.

I have thought of using a rear winch to help.

Hi Garry, it does fit, and currently is in its correct position, but there are a couple of reasons I want to move it out back. First is that it is a PITA where it is, and I have no chance of being able to unload it from there if I get a flat - I'll be calling the RACV. Second, you cannot see into the back with it there, it really cuts off your vision. Lastly, I think it would help having a bit of weight hanging out the back will help with the rear suspension. With the trailer on the back, it is heaps better with just the ball weight of the trailer on it.

I want to make a swing away carrier that I can get the spare on and off with on my own, but that can be removed if I want to have it looking more 'factory'

It will be a fairly big job to get it right, but it is high on my list of things to do - right after I get the wiring beaten into submission...
