Volvo joins V8 taxi racing

Awesome news. Gary Rogers is one smart man & he will do an excellent job for Volvo.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes for one of the "new" brands to actually win a race.
In spite of "Euro" technology, the good old Holden & Ford engines are pretty good gear, & well sorted over many years...I reckon they'll take a bit of catching...but it'll surely make some excellent racing.
I've never missed a Bathurst telecast, but I'm afraid I have to this year.....daughter has arranged the Baptism of her first child on the "wrong" day!

It doesn't have a lot to do with the proposed Volvo V8, but a review of the relevant section of the footage of the Celica passing the Volvo didn't include the phrase "mobile chicane". He does describe it in uncomplimentary terms though. However, I'm sure others used that phrase.

The "mobile chicane" car was in 1979.
It was a totally stock (apart from cage and harness and fuel tank...) 242GT and was even running on street tyres.
It was entered by a dealer to show just how good they were in bog standard form, and just missed out on a top 20 placing.
The cage etc was removed and the car was sold off later being fitted with a 740 turbo engine but was recently rediscover and the VIN verified as the car that raced at Bathurst and it is currently undergoing restoration back to Group C specs to compete in historic race meets.

I welcome Volvo into the V8s....but I'd quite like to see Chrysler field the 300C and BMW run a 5 series too...

No mobile chicane here. The volvo effortlessly passes a commodore halfway through.

Comments for this vid mention the "mobile chicane", however given how slow Gricey was going I think the comment is more fittingly applied to him!!!

Well, the safety car is a Chrysler, & I thought they (Chrysler) were going to Rogers, so maybe they'll go to some-one else. BMW?...I just don't think so, remember M.B. has nothing to do with the Erebus Team which has been derived from Betty's "passion" ($s!?)...but what about Audi?....Brad Jones had a long & successful run with them.

My limited understanding of the V8 rules - aren't all the cars built basicly to the same specs - frames / trannies and rear ends? Only difference is the motor, driver and external panels.
They need some sort of class that brings back the old - Win on Sunday Sell on Monday attitude of the 60's allowing you to buy what they race.

My understanding was similar. I understood the Rules were RWD, 5.0 L pushrod V8. However I lost interest in the holden vs ford thing a while ago so have not kept up.

Personally I liked the mid-late 80s races the best.

I think they should bring it back closer to production car racing. Unlimited safety mods (brakes, cage, etc..), Unlimited suspension, gearbox and diff mods but no active diffs or paddle shift etc... Engine blocks, heads and (super/)turbochargers must be production items and production capacities, but apart from that any fuel system and intake/exhaust mods are allowed.

A production volume rule could also be added to exclude supercars.

Not with the COTF. The Nissan runs the 5.4 (de-stroked IIRC) quad cam. Not sure what the Merc started as, but the model is based on an E63 (6.3 lt ???).

Volvo is starting with a 4.4 and doing who knows what to it.
