Which vehicle would you prefer to take off road taking the money out of the equation? I've seen a few of these around Canberra and can't believe its called a Range Rover? In the words of a well known song " If my eyes don't deceive me, there's something going wrong around here"

Funny you should ask, in this months LRM, there is an article titled "Evoque gets off road gears". The article starts with ' Evoque was aimed at the on-road driver, but now it's going to double as a serious off-road machine, thanks to a 9 speed gearbox with a super low ratio.'.....Evoque, because of its transverse engine & compact underbody, doesn't have a transfer box with an off road gear ratio." In pure off road capability - as standard it would have to be the Range Rover Sport - has modern inbuilt capability but in a shorter body and wheel base than the D3/D4.

Has similar ground clearance to RRC with standard tyres etc but better aids though the RRC has a shorter wheelbase.

If you start talking modded vehicles then ultimately a RRC would come out ahead but only because you can do more radical stuff to a RRC than you could do to a RRS.

To mention the Elephant in the Room...

Depends on your disposable income.
If you can afford, or not worry about the dents and bush pinstriping and/or the co$t of recovering it from Very Interesting Locations.... then go for Mrs Beckham's toy. It will be an economical, luxurious & relaxing drive out to the ruff stuff....and back home again. Or should be bearable in a dual cab flat-top.

But if you would like to experience the 'masculinity' of a bit more noise, less magic-carpet ride and no doubt visit even more exotic places on a less obese bank balance (or not...) then Rangella ain't redundant yet. You can lift it, expand it, make it louder, bigger wheels and ea$ily add more goodies

What is more important ? - relishing the ride on the route you take or the satisfaction of 'arriving' ? - 'doing' the journey with the greatest ease & comfort.

My Classic is a Daily Driver, on HT tyres... But it's a dream I've always had, - along with the confidence to potentially go where a low-slung, delicate soft-roader would worry...

My rellie recently bought a 4 year old RRS, loves the driving of it.... but will use Wife's (6 year old) Prado when he goes down the beach or risk the striping... Also knows that they will never be stranded on a potential breakdown. I can't even afford the Toyota...

Does that make it easier ?

PS, I have always gravitated to Older Women, though these days 'Middle Aged' is becoming appealing....... No offence Gloria.

I'd take a $1000 RRC over a $100,000 glorified X5, Disco 3 or Freelander with a Range Rover badge off road any day, especially an '83 like mine with bugger all to go wrong.

You can't own any of the new LR's outside of the warranty period, but that covers practically every new 4WD.

Of the shelf I'd take an L322. They have a lot more suspension than the sport.

Modified however you like I'd take a classic.

Maybe fewer features to go wrong, but age and wear and tear not on it's side.

Money no object? New FFRR, Just because I could. If it breaks down, just charter a big lift chopper to come and lift it out.

My pick would be a D1 V8 (3.9) gassed,power,RRC chassis and ease of componemt change, but then I am bias as I have a RRC and a 300TDI D1
