    Weird problems on the road and temporary fixes

    The strangest problem occurred a few years whilst driving my 2A 3 door. I was coming back to Sydney from the mid north coast towing my camper. The weather was horrible with driving rain and low visibility. Stopped at a servo to fill tank when I noticed that the camper had no running lights and the 2A had no rear lights , front were ok. Suspecting a possible blown fuse I checked and rear fuse was ok. So that left a wiring problem. Having used my last cash to pay for fuel I rang the NRMA roadservice and one guy eventually arrived. I explained the problem, and as there was water running everywhere he was reluctant to even get out of his vehicle. I said that I didn't need him to do anything except to give me a roll of tape and a roll of hook up wire. He tossed them to me and took off. Whilst waiting I had opened the dash so I hooked the wire to the light terminal, climbed over the gear in the back, propped up the tailgate, removed the glass tail light cover, hooked up the wire and replaced the glass. The lights worked so drove home with this jury rig. Never did find the fault. Jim

    Just last November I was travelling for work between Coen/Pormpuraaw/Kowanyama and back to Cooktown.
    On the Kow-Pormp leg the washer/wiper switch stopped working with burnt contacts (kinda like the usual Defender headlight problem)
    Plenty of storms about and water on the track so I needed wipers and wash.

    Disconnected the multiplug of the wash/wipe stalk and made a short jumper lead from some wire.
    One end jammed into the earth of the multiplug and then when needed I would touch the other end to either the wash terminal or fast wipe terminal. Was clinky and cumbersome but worked. Got home and only had a few days before heading bush again so I went superflash and put in a double pole double throw switch. Up for wash down for fast wipe.

    I do intend to buy a replacement LRover stalk but my bodge is still there today.

    Having gotten my licence all of a week earlier, my younger brother and I headed off on a road trip from Toowoomba to Melbourne in my step-father's IIA with 186.
    After a blow-out at 90km/h near Goondowindi on day one, we came into Dubbo on Sat arvo to a god almighty racket. The collector pipe that ran under the chassis cross-member was rusted and had broken clean through. No shops of any description open in the town so on we went.

    Eventually we came to an open servo with a workshop attached. 1 x WD40 can cut lengthways, a couple of hose clamps and some exhaust putty and we were good to go. Monday morning in Seymour it was into the local exhaust shop for a proper fix. The guys were most impressed with the fix.

    Was on the Ernest Giles Rd and lost brakes. The steel brake line from the long side caliper to the tee on the salisbury housing snapped off right at the tee. I undid the flare nut, inserted a small brass terminal screw from a terminal strip, did the flare nut back up and bled her up on 3. Did about 2000 km before I found someone with a flaring tool.

    I had a TA23 Celica and was driving home from Tocumwal on the Murray back to Melbourne on a wet stormy night with my younger brother , about 45 mins from home the lights starting getting dim and wipers slowed down.
    I suppose the stereo/ lights/wipers/demister were all too much for the battery so i had to turn off everything bar the lights, i then got my 13 yo brother to sit on the passenger door with glass down and with one removed wiper arm he would wipe the drivers side of the screen for me untill we got home.

    I was out with the lads in my old 2A with powerhouse red 186 bolted into it when the harmonic balancer died, hunted around and found some 50 cent coins to jam in it, lasted another 5 years

    I have used the same method but with Coke cans, back when soft drinks came in tins.
    If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
