Have not done this for some time however when I did latency was a problem. Skype should work with that bandwidth but there will be a delay like when you are talking on a sat phone.
Am pondering the purchase of a portable satellite broadband setup, to get onto the internet when there is no mobile coverage. Would mean I could be in remote places and not cut off from work & etc.
This is the sort of thing:

Plan T2 - Fast 2Gb - Remote Internet
Download speed - 512kb/s
Upload speed - 256kb/s
Monthly data allowance 2Gb
Cost - $69 per month
The cost of the dish and associated hardware is about $3500.
Any experiences with the following
- Easy to set up?
- How does it work with Skype?
- Any other companies/products to look at?
Thanks
David

I treat latency on VSAT, as you would when using a two way radio and as long as you wait with a pause before replying, it is easy to use.
This is a link to an Australian company that has been around supplying Satellite receiving equipment before most of this later gear was first thought of.

Say good day to Wally for me.
.
I ws going to ask the same question.
We are on Skymesh here at home with a dish on the roof for internet.
Telstra 3G wont work. Cant see why we cant carry a dish and point it at the sattelite same as at home. Perhaps its too simple.
Hi Spudboy. We have a Skymesh dish, wires and the VoIP thingy that goes with it.... It's still on our roof and has not been used for several years as we got sooooo fffffeeeeeeddddddd uuuuuuppppppp wwwwiiiitttthhhh Skymesh being soooooo slllllloooooowwwww!!! You are welcome to come unbolt it and use it to see if you can make a mobile setup... It's still set for the Skymesh Satelite as it stands so u might b able to get some angles and direction off that... IMO even though we all hate them and you have to make a complaint before being able to speak with an Australian Telstra is the only option. The dish offer is here if you want it.![]()
Thanks for that offer - that would give me a chance to play with things on the cheap. I'll find out if I can get a short term connection perhaps. Not exactly a glowing recommendation for satellite internet though!
I am on their cheapest plan. Its $26 per month. Its slow but I dont know what fast is as it is all I have used.
Skymesh use the IPSTAR Satellite.
I will see how you go.
