Three days, with Darling harbour as a base. First of , as a pensioner , [ I assume that, forgive me if I am wrong] you can buy a day ticket on public transport in Sydney that can take you as far as the Blue Mt's. to the West & Newcastle to the North & as far again south. If you are a walker, I suggest a look around the Rocks, then a walk to the fish markets, [ best battered fish I've tasted] Maritime museum, good value, my old ship Vampire, is there. Get on a ferry, any ferry, look at the harbour. The list is almost endless, when you get to your hotel, they will have suggestions for you. Take the opportunity to check out one of the best cities in the World. Bob

Your forgiven, but the wife earns too much for me to get anything, that's why I am carrying the bags.

Surely unmolested fish taste better then battered, beat up ones.

I'm going to get the Big ticket and spend some time around the Maritime museum.

But they don't have 'MONA' do they?

Are there any four wheel drive tracks within 3 Klm's of the CBD, like Hobart has?

whatever you do ,Don't forget to Spend a cood deal of your time at the Power House Museum close to darling harbour,one of the better days you will ever waste.
If your really stuck and Bored hop on a train to Wollongong and Call me
I'll show you around Paradise on earth.and yes there are 4WD places within 5klm of "Town".

Sydney is probably the best city in Australia to be stuck in without a vehicle.
Trains, busses, trams and ferries can take you just about anywhere you want to go.
Jump on an intercity train at Central station and head up to the Blue Mountains, or Newcastle or Wollongong - all of those are great trips and will take the best part of a day if you stopover for lunch and a look around. The scenery is spectacular on any of those trips once you get out of the metro area, and it is still quite interesting in the metro.
As others said, explore the harbour - Manly, Watsons Bay, up the river to Parramatta. Bus to the top of Taronga Zoo, ferry back from the bottom. Tram down from Central to Chinatown for a poke around.
Only thing missing is a Monorail!
It truly is a wondeful place to visit for a few days.

Take a guided tour of the Opera House, looking at the weather you may have to organise in door pursuits, so check out the oldest continuous Aussie.licenced pub, the Australia Hotel, near the Rocks. take the ferry to Manly, have lunch at the excellent restaurant on the wharf. As mentioned , you need more than a few days to take in all Sydney has to offer. But, if you are like most people from quieter areas of Aus., the hectic pace & crowds of Sydney will give you a greater appreciation of your own home. [ Also Sydney was a dirty city last time we were there, especially Chinatown] Bob
