    Rear Axle Broken

Hi everybody seven months ago the motor mechanic hear in Broome replaced both rear axles and supposedally all the necessary bits and pieces that go with with rear axle replacement were done also today Sunday the right rear axle is spinning in the female spline on the wheel hub as it disengaged, firstally do I have any recourse with the motor mechanic and secondally if not can I replace the axle and neccesarry parts by myself with limited experience at the same time i would like to do front and rear shock absorbers and the steering mechanism tracking bar and again can this be done with limited experience this car has cost me over ten thousand dollars in the last four years. Can anyybody give me honest advice as to what choices I have.

Saffer, you can totally do that yourself.. easy - believe!

For the rear axle on the defender you only need to undo the drive flange bolts and pull it off with the shaft. Drive flange bolts and a circlip is all there is to it... too easy.

For the shocks you only need to undo the lower bolt and compress the shock to clear the bottom pin free, then undo the top end and pull it clear. Again too easy.

Get stuck in - save some money - enjoy the other side of owning a land rover!

See Bblase and get an assessment first,
(I assume he is in Broome if he says so, even if his location says Tassie!)

then work out what to do from there.

    cheers & good luck

Hi Saffer , take bblaze offer and pop around to see him . Getting back to your question can you fix the axel yourself , you'll never know till you try !The Land Rover rear axel would have to be one ,if not the easiest axels to replace .You say that they were replaced 7 months ago , do you drive your truck hard ? also you don't say what model it is ? cheers jimr1 ..

It may be just a worn driven member on the outer wheel hub, they are of softer material to act as a weaker link to protect axles/diffs.
Robbie(BBlaze) is a good bloke, besides having that extra head
Catch up with him for a chat,he works at one of Broomes mechanic shops saving up money to remove the extra head
    GOODLUCK
