Thread: Maree to Innamincka travel Time

It depends on whether you are going from Maree to Innamincka via Birdsville or Lyndhurst.

Not sure what it is like now, but when I last travelled it the Strz was really good fast clay cap which I think Santos might have been maintaining to Moomba and we sat on 90-100km/h for most of it. I would leave a conservative travel of 8hrs+, but call it a full day between leaving Maree, stops along the way, getting into Innamincka store and then heading out to the river if you are camping.

A full day for us was Lyndhust to Tibooburra.

The Strzeleki won't take full two days, but with the reduced number of daylight hours at the moment I would allow 2 days for easy travelling (it's not always as good as Slunnie says - often corrugated).

There's no fuel or shops between Lyndhurst & Innaminka

If I had a spare 2-3 days when at Innaminka I would not miss a visit to & a camp at Coongie Lakes (fresh water lakes fed by Cooper('s) Ck)

Very cold nights out that way at the moment !

Thanks for the replies. The lakes look good.Thats why I want to head up the track as fast as possible (within reason) to have more time for more interesting parts of the area.

Maree to Lyndhurst is little more than an hour (about 80 km). Lyndhurst to Innaminka (about 470 km) will vary from about about 8 hours to a couple of days depending on the Strzelecki Track condition (can be more or less).

First time I did the Straz it was only two wheel tracks winding through paddocks and gates and IIRC took about four days.

With it now being the main supply link to Moomba, the 'track' has deteriorated to about a four lane freeway and I have recently heard on the grape vine (which is not always reliable) that sections are now sealed.

It should only take you about seven or eight hours driving time to cover the 544kms from Marree to Innamincka but unfortunately, at that pace you'll miss a lot of the interesting/historic spots along the way.

My late father-in-law and I drove from Hawker to Innaminka in a long day a few years back towing a 22' Golf Airliner caravan. No problems to either the tow vehicle or van.

The Lyndhurst to Moomba section was well-maintained, and having a fair bit of work done on it, as others have said. The sections after that to Innaminka were so-so and the last hour or so was in the dark.

Stopped at quite a few sites along the way. The most interesting was seeing a pack of dingoes driving a small herd of cattle through the dunes south of Moomba. Presumably to keep them off water until weak enough to drag one of them down - had heard of it, but to then hadn't seen it.

The folowing day at Innaminka at the fuel stop we were informed by the visiting 4X4 blowhards not the try to drive that rig down the Strez track because we would be ____ing mad and would never make it.......... Guess they're everywhere.
