Thread: Hickey winch

Well it has been a couple of weeks since I got the old Hickey winch. Finally opened it up and had a look. It is in near perfect condition. Have not tried the motor with power, but it spins no problem. Worm and worm gear have no wear that I can see. There is a pin that needs replacement. Which should be easy enough to make. It has a good length of cable of about 35 meters that is in good condition. Not a winch to plough through bog holes with though as mud would stop it real quick. Will have to see if I can seal it up a bit more. But so far a good buy for forty dollars. Just needed a good service and the centre pin replaced.

Going to centre mount it?

I could as there is already a pulley set up on the rangie chassis from a former owner for a mid mount winch. So some of the work is already done. Would of course be easier to mount it on the front. Will have a good look at a centre mount. What you see in that pic is the back of the winch.
This is the top view. Under the wires in the centre of the drum is a pin. This pin engages and disengages the drum. This is the pin that needs attention. Where it passes through the lid is corroded. There is or should be a seal in the lid that seals against the pin. Is a design problem as the lid as you can see is dished. This would fill with water, so if the pin does not seal the drum internals then fill with water. The flat plate with a round tube attached at the bottom of the pic is not fitted correctly. The bloke who sold it had taken some of it apart and realised it was full of gear oil.( A minty moment I`m guessing ) So put it back together with out much attention to detail. I would recommend from own personal experiance to dissassemble this winch in a old bath as it is near impossible not to get gear oil every where. At least my work shop floorbords have been oiled now.
