"Cheers" for that "pearl" of "wisdom".

Here's something I picked up from the BBC.

"Not since 1985 and David Gower's sun-kissed summer have they won three Tests in a home Ashes series; with one more to come this time around, they have the chance at The Oval to do what no England side has ever done and win four Ashes Tests in a series in this country."

Granted it's not about the individual, it's about the team. yes they may be closely matched on paper but England seem to be more than the sum of the parts, Australia, possibly less. Outstanding players are forged over a career, not a series, there have been some outstanding performances though. The following, again taken from the BBC, puts some perspective on just how well two individuals have performed.

"With Stuart Broad's figures of 11-117 at Chester-le-Street and James Anderson's 10-158 at Trent Bridge, two England bowlers have taken 10 wickets in a match in an Ashes series for the first time in 79 years."

Over recent times there has been a renaissance in English sporting performance, this is in no small part due to a generation of athletes who have benefited from an increase in funding and facilities brought about by a socialist government and lottery funding. It won't last forever but while it does I'm going to enjoy it.

Well done England, I'm looking forward to your summer visit to our shores.

    Ian.

    Thumbs up

Having emigrated from Manchester a LLOONNGG time ago, I still barrack for the Poms (& M.U. too!)when the Ashes are being played.....and, over the years they have needed as much support as they can get, because things mostly haven't been as "Good" as they are now....Steve waugh, McGrath, Warne etc etc have seen to that.
So now, I am very happy to see "us" doing well.
Yes, I think England are currently the better "Team", & I'm glad they are....but I still think there's not much between us.....I mean, in the !st Test, we won by what...14 runs, & in the 3rd, we would've lost, but for rain?
So, things could have been different, but of course I'm glad they're not! I hope we win the 5th also.
I feel that the next "contest" when "We" visit Australia, will also be close....& I'd love to see us come out on top again.
    Cheers, Pickles.

Yep, its certainly disappointing for us not to be competitive at the moment. There are fine moments from individuals (Harris, Clarke, Rogers, Lyon etc), but its just not coming together as a team.
Mind you, there was one very close test, and we could have won the last one if it had not rained. That would have made it two-all and set up a cracker final test, but it wasn't to be.
In times like these, we've just gotta accept we can't always win and show the grit to stick at it and eventually it will come good. Look at our swimming team which was once all-conquering, but has come down to earth.
No-one said life was meant to greasy, as Malcolm Fraser once reminded us (I think it was him).

Think you've got it bad? At least it is entertaining cricket. Try looking for positives when you've got a national team called the Black Caps... :sigh:

    True.
Still, you've also got the All Blacks.
Balances out a bit, doesn't it?

Okey dokey, a little over 1 week to go. Bailey, averaging under 20 in shield cricket last year, in & "wayward" Mitchell Johnson in. Will "softy" Watson bowl? Does it matter?
Question mark over Pietersen & Prior but Cook, Carberry, Bell & Anderson in form.
Looking forward to a great series but I think you guys will struggle.

I can't wait and I reckon the Aussies are in with a chance.

    Bring it on.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

As long as Clarke is captain, we'll never win the Ashes, just my opinion
