one of the best things in adelaide (compared to syd and melb):
i can drive where i want without playing any tolls.
This applies in NSW but most likely also applies in other states.
I have a NSW RTA e tag and have had no issues with it - admin fees are zero and just pay the tolls (this is not a discussion on whether there should be tolls). I understand that there are four Toll Etag companies in NSW.
I recently read where someone was getting toll fees on their RTA ETag for a vehicle that had been long sold, even though the correct change of registration process had been followed the change had not been recorded on the E-tag information. Basically there was no communication between internal areas in the RTA.
I rang the NSW RTA Etag office today and they confirmed it was correct as the other 3 private etag companies were not permitted access to change of registration information the RTA Etag office was set up the same to ensure they had no advantage (yet go go through a toll and not pay it seemed every can have access to your details). A car I sold 18 months ago was still listed on my accountwhich I had it removed.
So the lesson for today is when you sell a vehicle that was on an etag account make sure you advise the etag company as part of the selling process - do not assume the registration authorities do it because they don't and you might get fees from your old car on your account.

That one caught me out a few years ago. Telling them u sold the car is no good you need proof. Definatly a case of guilty till u can prove innocence.
In Qld that would happen if you didn't notify your tag provider.
You don't need to be the registered owner of a vehicle to have a vehicle on your tag account. Toll tags have nothing to do with rego in Qld.
Even if you kept the tag when you sold your car (as you should) they will iust plate match the car and bill the toll to its registered toll account. Which is your accoubt if you didn't remove it.
Exactly the same thing happened to me.
No tolls on my account for the old car for four months after the sale so I relaxed about it. Then small amounts began to appear which I did not notice until a very big $1000 of tolls in one month - total of $1600 of tolls!
You can fill out a stat-dec with supporting proof of date of sale and RMS will have the errant tolls transferred to the new owner.

Another trap is if your e-tag is linked to a credit card and it expires and you get a new card. Here in Qld, if you don't tell the e-tag people your new card details, the charge is no longer charged against your credit card, but goes unpaid and you get a big bill in the mail.
Very timely warning garry.
It is also an issue if you link a trailer plate to your account and loan out your trailer to friends, the truck rate may come back to haunt you for all the trips your friends did along the motorway.

Nothing.
The priority is:
- The eTag on the vehicle is used for the billing.
- If no eTag on the vehicle the camera reading of the vehicle plate either front or rear is used. AFAIK they will attempt to bill the vehicle plate.
- The camera will also read and record the trailer plate. If the vehicle is not registered to an account and the trailer plate is registered to an account they bill the trailer's account holder.

I have an E-Tag here in Qld which has all of my 4 vehicles which includes those on Historic, as I don't use the toll (Gateway Bridge) very often mainly just to go to the Gold Coast LR Club meetings,so I just put $50 into my A/c every 3 months
cheers
