I am not one for buying from E bay or on line as I purposely don't have a credit card.
I tend to lay buy stuff from local shops etc.
It is a bit harder to get value for money that way.
At the Jaycar shop they are selling smallish 3600 lumen pencil and flood spot lights.
I have purchased one pencil beam item for 119 dollars and tested it against a known light source in the paddock behind the house in fairly controlled conditions.
The control source is a large reflector 100w Cibie pencil beam 1980s vintage light.
The jaycar item is equal in every way, but throws a whiter light easier to see light.
current draw with the Cibie is bout 10 amps at 12 volt.
The jaycar LED I measured at 2.75 amps at 12 volt.
Due to the small size of these lights I intend to mount 2 pencil beam and 2 flood beam to the front ,one above and below the other using the same mounting bracket and bolts of my 4BY giving 14000 lumens and if you buy more than 2 lights at a time the price drops to 99 dollars each.
The only thing I could fault with the light is the mounting bracket is strong enough , but a bit primitive.
Worth looking at.

Ron, which model CibiƩ are you comparing it to ?
I am just doing my research on some Spotties at the moment, from what I can glean, LED's appear to be excellent for spread beam type applications and the colour of the lights are good, but for distance the HID lights are the way to go.
I think I am currently settling on a set of HID converted Hella Rallye ff 4000 compacts
Well done ,, 16 bucks cheaper than Ebay. & local support included..

I don't know , they are the old style big reflector 100w.( I happen to have a set in the garage)
I was really comparing old tech 100w halgen beam spotties to the new LED for power, spread ,ect.
The Jaycar LED items are the same performance including the distance of throw.
I have been looking at LED light bars etc for a while.
The prices are dropping and the performance is getting better.
These jaycar LEDs will replace my existing bull bar 100w halgen lights at a price I can afford and laybuy from the local shop in town.
There would be much better performing LED lights out there, but it is extremely good for the price and they are small and compact fitting into standard bull bar light mounts.
They are small enough to fit two lights, one above the bull bar mounting and one below and if four light s are fitted for a cost of 400 dollars and 14000 lumens of light.....two spread beam. two pencil beam....good value and light.
Seeing the two types of light working side by side set up shining down a paddock running off a jump starter battery pack, the LEDs win by the quality of the light , as the white /blue light reflects back off trees and rocks etc much better than the while /orange light from a old style bulb
I have never owned HID lights and suspect they would throw further than halgen/LED.
I suspect unless I am barrelling down a outback road at over 100 kph, the 300 mtr throw of the LEDs is more than enough for the bush drivng I do round the east coast and will still give me time to react to roos on the side of the road.......they are no worse in throw than what I am using in old tech 100w lights.
the light throw specs are on the link above.
I've been looking at these lights at jaycar too, interested in them both for the Defender's and for fitting to a motorbike (Ducati Multistrada).
Also Re; AnD3rew's post, (Hella Rallye ff4000 compact HID's), one of the forum members posted on here a little while ago a comparo that was done on driving lights by 4wdAction magazine, I seem to recall that there was some issues with the Hella lights, but also recall that they were given best HID spread beam in the HID class.
Best overall for HID was the lightforce 240 XGT HID.
However the new FYRLYT thingy's were not in the article at all (I do not know wether they were released at the time of the article).
Anyways, back to the Jaycar lights, I'll probably try a pair of the spread beams on the motorbike and if they don't fit/work properly on it, I'll then put them on one of the Defenders.
Mike.
how do the led's compare with the hid's for reflection back from signs.and guideposts reflector's etc.I find the hid's [cheap chinese] excellent for distance but hard on the old eyes due to the reflection back on long runs [and i never go over 100 km\hr up here of a night]
I have a good quality LED bar (Baja Designs 40") mounted under my roofrack, and a pair of 65 watt pencil beam HID XRay Vision spotlights mounted on the bulbar.
For light spread and lighting up out to the sides of the road, there is no comparison. The LED light bar is in a league of its own.
Yes - the HID's do give longer range, but at nowhere near the light intensity of the LED light bar. Looking at the photos in Ron's attachment, I would estimate that I do not get the range out of my light bar that Ron might be achieving with the Jaycar lights (better / different reflector shape ???).
Reflection of light from signs / roadside reflectors etc is about the same from LED as from HID - both are a white light and reflect much more than conventional halogen yellow light.
Cheers .........
