    Grey mouth bar

I have been over that bar a few times when I was in the NZ Navy on patrol craft, there is about 8-10 knots of current flowing out of the river mouth on a flood tide or in periods of heavy rain in the mountains, and these boats can probably do that at full power, so they seem to rely on surfing down the waves to make ground and 'mark time' in between the swells. The Grey river bar is one of the most treacherous bars in the country, the pubs on the wharf had a similar reputation back in the '80s as well! But if you have $100,000 of Crayfish on board for the Asian markets and a helicopter standing by to fly it to Christchurch and on to a commercial flight to Tokyo, you,d probably have a run at it too.

These skippers and crews were/are tough buggers and believe it or not, most of them know what they are doing. I have stood where the camera was and watched them come in and thought 'stuff that' its really butt clenching watching, let alone being on board.

Just another day at the office for those blokes, they would not have been concerned one bit. They are professional fishermen, it's their job. And they are very good at it. Same the World over, nothing special about them, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
