Looks like they were just waiting for the right wave set to get over what looks like a pretty tricky sandbar.
That's what "local knowledge" is all about.
I think it is Graymouth that has a reputation as such a bar.
As for the comment about boat handling I think they are doing all they can.
The waves pick you up and "have their way" with you
I have crossed a few in my time
Note the broken stabilizer on the starboard side. That can be a worry with the other still in the water. (pull to one side.)
Good shots and a bit goulish to be watching for a disaster but that is human nature.
Make fish look REAL cheap when you see it in the shops!
