Brisbane to Canberra - Road Conditions

    HI All,

Taking a road trip from Brisbane to Canberra soon and I was wondering if anyone has travelled the Newell or New England Highways recently?

I do the trip to the snow each year but have always taken the Coastal Route. This year I was thinking of mixing it up and doing either the New England or the Newell but was wondering what condition they were in.

The GPS say they are >1 hour more than the Pacific but they used to be about the same.

    Thanks

    Dan

I did Brisbane to Canberra and Sydney to Brisbane a few weeks ago. I went the New England, as I think it's a lovely drive, and not as prone to road works and traffic as the Pacific.

The Newell is OK, probably flatter but not as scenic. If I was in a hurry to get to Melbourne I'd take the Newell.

I drive to newcastle several times a year and I'll take the new England over the pacific any day. Less road works, traffic and police.

I drove the newell about a year ago to dubbo i doubt it's changed since then. It's a nice road as well. But it is very straight in parts. if you drive at night you will be watching the head lights of on coming cars for what feels like forever.

I usually do New England over pacific between Brisbane and Sydney its a little longer but less traffic and less hassle, it is the best choice.

If you have the time, going there or back, you can travel some very interesting back roads (all tar sealed) by taking the NE Hwy from Bris to Tamworth, then go to Werris Creek (railway museum) then Coolah, Dunedoo(good pies), Wellington, Molong, Cowra, and Boorowa to Canberra.

Take a look at the map, it's much more of a straight line than the highways and there is usually very little traffic.

I travel the Cunningham/New England from Bris to Tamworth every fortnight and it is a pleasant enough drive apart from the roadworks between Amberley and Cunninghams Gap. I will be so glad when this is finally all finished.
