Geology based vacation work over summer break

    Hi,
I am a 2nd year Geology student at the University of Ballarat, I will be graduating at the end of next year and hope to pick up a graduate geologist role. After this semester ends in late November, I will be looking for some student vacation work for 12 weeks over the summer break.
Basically what I am after here is any advice about which companies to contact, maybe something outside the box that people working in the industry may be able to tell me?
Other students seem to only want to go for the huge mining companies, I feel I will have more success if i target the smaller operations.

I imagine there are quite a few people here on the forum that work or have worked in the minerals industry. Any advice will be appreciated.

    Fire away!

Most of our focus at uni is on metals so that is what i had in mind, however i'd like to get some experience in CSG or coal if the opportunity came up

If you are involved with the AIG or AusIMM contact them to see if they have any leads. If there are any meetings of geos in your local area attend them and network.

Other ideas.... Look at geophysical survey companies who may need labour over the summer period and if you are brave cold call any mine sites you can find and ask to speak to the chief geologist to geology manager. Helps to know their name, which you can find out, for smaller companies by visiting their website and looking at their last quarterly report. At the end will be a competent persons statement which will state the name of the person who signed off on the results or resources. End of the day you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.

    Cheers

    Steve

Have a chat to Scallops, he is a geologist based in Brisbane, might be able to help out.
