You can but the govt costs and redtape do not normally make it finaincially viable.

I think a few people need to investigate the import regulations a little more.

You are able to do a personal import for a vehicle built in 1989 or after, so long as the vehicle was owned and available for your use in another country for at least a year. This has a residential requirement for you to be living in the other country.

There is also the special imports scheme, where specialist automotive garages have approval to import some low volume new vehicles. This is what happens for Lanborginis, Maseratis, Orange County Choppers and even Mitsubishi Delicas. However Land Rover Australia has the rights to import Land Rover and their presence restricts to ability of other specialist automotive garages to use the Special Imports Scheme. Ask Anthony Johnson from British 4WD Imports about this.

So unless you are living overseas, you have Buckley's chance of importing a post 1988 Land Rover privately.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

you hear about the jap car scene importing cars to Aus so I can't see why it couldn't be done.

Probs wouldn't be worth it if you could buy the same Land Rover here in Aus.
There are hefty import taxes and the car must be up to Australian standards which also means paying someone to certify it.

As already said there is a scheme which allows cars to be more easily imported if you import your personal car after owning it for a year or two.

Absolutely correct! The law allows pretty much anything before 1st Jan 1989, but only "personal imports" and "specialist" vehicles post this date. To qualify for "specialist" it has to be on the SEVS register, and in Victoria can only be imported by a RAWS garage.

If you are buying left hand drive then the vehicle has to >30 years old to be registered without conversion to right hook.

Good point - it's easy to confuse import requirements and local registration requirements. You have to satisfy both.

But before it lands in Australia it has to have the import permit, if it arrives without one it will never be registered and only be useful as a parts donor.
