Do I risk using this Engine Crane

I purchased a 1250 kg Engine Crane today. When I opened the box & started to assemble, I noticed the welding. I'm not happy with the standard of the welding & would not risk safety by using the crane without first re-welding.

The question is whether to return the crane or weld it properly. I paid $199 for it so welding it properly is an attractive option.

    What do the experts think?

Personally I would get the supplier to replace it at their cost, even though its cheap, you expect it to be safe.
They may give you an "allowance" to keep it and fix it yourself.

Is there any load on any of those welds?

I can't tell from the photos if those welds just hold pieces in place, but don't have any strain on them.

Well, while it's true to say that you get what you pay for, it's also true in UK law (& I believe Oz law as well) that any item must be fit for purpose when sold.
I suspect the fly in the ointment here is, would a court consider a poorly made hoist to be fit for purpose (DIY mechanicing) if it fell apart after, say, 20 lifts?

Personally I agree with the others - return it as unfit (&) potentially unsafe for purpose & obtain either a full refund or a hoist that is fit for purpose. Be prepared for a bit of a discussion on the subject with the vendor.

I purchased a 900Kg truck/trailer crane, my welding fabricator looked at the device and was satisfied with the welding on the jib but not with the base and mounting.

We contacted the importer who stated that the crane/jib part is rated to Australian standards, but the base is not. What is more they didn't see a problem with substandard base, even though the entire weight is on the base.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Take it back to supercheap and complain. It is however probably safe to use as the hydraulic cylinder is more than likely low on oil so won't actually lift the arm high enough to tension the chain hooked to the engine

Super cheap would take it back no questions asked and probably throw it straight in the bin out the back.

You might get someone that is willing to knock some money off but not too likely.

How often are you going to get and engine crane for 199?
