Young people don't understand the difference between 99.99% safe and 99.999% safe. One is 10 times as likely to lead to death than the other although both seem safe with limited experience. I'll stick to 100/110 so long as there's other idiots around. And 130 is unlikely to ever be allowed anywhere other than NT any time soon.

It connects the bogan suburbs with beach bum heaven, the southern surf beaches. Idiots use the road, in other words.

    why is it moot?

if the people are demanding 130, being in a democracy, the politicians should be doing what the people want.

instead we have lost control of our govt and the govt doesn't do what the people want.

well i do, lots of crashes, but i cant understand why so many people crash there.

good quality road, lots of overtaking lanes, etc etc.
it doesnt seem like a poor stretch of road.
It's there to be seen. There are a lot of reasons.
    - driver attitude
    - excessive speed
    - drivers not driving to the conditions
    - inconsideration to other road users

    and

    - speed limits set too high

In my opinion, with the amount of traffic on that road, the speed limit should be 80km/h. If they changed it to that, the accident rate would drop.
Now, I drive that road at 100km/h. I have driven it at 110km/h quite some years back. I have driven it in cars that are 3m long. There are some sections that are quite challenging at that speed. Where do most of the accidents occur on that road? On the long straight bits.

Well the nearest comparable road northwards is Pt Wakefield Rd to Yorke Peninsula and it has far less corners and better overtaking opportunities being dual lane to Port W. The SE freeway to the Murray River ditto. These roads cope better with idiot drivers. South Rd needs to be divided dual lane all the way to reduce the chance of head-ons caused by stupidity.

    hog wash.

the set speeds/recommended speed for corners along that road is about right.

you could make the speed limit 60km/h, people will still crash and it will increase congestion, which in turn increases crashes.

i remember 1 section of the road heading towards adel, it was an overtaking lane, but if you needed to turn right and had oncoming traffic, you had to stop in the overtaking lane. that design was stupid.

Because the people doing the demanding are such a minority it makes Boy George fans look like a major political force.

    oh really.

i take it you didnt see the phone in poll where over 400,000 people rang in saying they want 130km/h limits.

Almost 400,000 votes in half an hour, majority want speed limits raised.
the tv poll was shown in nsw

    http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-and...te_for_130km_h

    and..

According to Channel 7’s online poll 60 per cent of Victorian voters wanted the speed limit increased to 140km/h, compared to 57 per cent of viewers from NSW and Queensland.
