Funny how the people in charge think 130 is going to cause death and destruction on our roads yet seem more than happy to let grey nomads wobble along at 80 in grossly overloaded toyota's towing vans with no experience other than having the money to buy them. Pat

When we first came to Oz in the early 70s we went to Melbourne and couldn't believe the sheer stupidity and ignorance of drivers towards others. Even the old copper who tested me at Morrabin said "Be very afraid here and don't rely on anyone to do anything resembling good driving". Then I was transferred to Perth!!!!! WOW.
What total idiots even surpassing Vics drivers although at least they had a major/minor road system here.
Not that anyone took any notice of stop/giveway signs but at least they were there.
Shocking cars all with drum brakes and you sat there and hoped you'd stop eventually until the P76 came out with discs on the front as standard and John Button started cutting the enormous tariffs allowing better vehicles in.
Roads have improved a bit but still far too many lights everywhere especially in "traffic light city - Perth".
And there's too many donkey stuffers, camel drivers and those with absolutely no driving ability/comprehension at all allowed on the roads in case someone gets upset and shouts about discrimination.
No, don't increase the limits because the nut behind the wheel hasn't changed.

Hi Alan

I'm sure there must be back handers going on with all the traffic lights that get installed. Each set is a cash cow with a guaranteed monopoly for the next twenty years.

There must be an RTA policy of taking the most expensive option.
Examples are when you see lights installed at intersections at the next side street to an existing set in places where it would be cheaper and more efficient for traffic flow to run the median strip across the break.

For someone paying attention, or someone not paying attention?

Someone doing 90 with a no interest in driving, and paying no attention will stop far far slower than someone doing 130 paying full attention, aware of all surroundings and giving consideration to all things happening around them.

Something else to think about,

Last week, I told 2 cabbies to stop due to their poor driving in Sydney CBD, and got out, and both at or under 40kph. The thought of them doing 130 is very scary, even the thought of them doing 60 is scary!

How do these guys get their license?

This brings back memories of when we went from open speed limits to 130km/h in the NT.

Easy answer is come up and visit and you can do 130 on the way in and 130 on the way back out

A new 5 seat 2013 Defender 110 should be able to reach speeds of between approx 380 - 470km/h depending on whether it is empty or fully loaded and dropped from a sufficient height.

In a free fall situation (after being dropped from a plane for example) the efficacy of the brakes may be compromised somewhat.

Many of us are old enough to remember the Derestriction signs in the southern states too.



Where the general speed limit of 60 MPH didn't apply. Usually on country gravel roads.
