Thread: 130km/h speed limits

Bob, Well heaps of them...There are too many, all the major cities are linked with a dual lane motorway. Like Rome to Paris via the Riviera then through Lyon. Paris west out to the coast through Le Mans, Paris north to Antwerp where you follow the TGV train and have it whizz by you as if you are standing still. Paris east to Basel and Switzerland. Frankurt to Brussels through the Rhine Valley. Frankfurt to Berlin, Frankfurt south to Switzerland, Berlin to Hamburg (the original "Autobahn"), Berlin to Prague to Vienna to Bratislava to Budapest. Vienna to Venice and then Rome. Rome to Naples. Rome north through Milan to France through the Mt Blanc tunnel (something like 30kph for a long time through there). Many more, in UK and even up through Scandinavia. I don't remember if they had names and I couldn't remember the numbers. Heaps of city names in Europe aren't the same as their English name like Florence is actually Firenza etc etc so it gets to be a jumble of gobbledy gook. All I can say is our roads like the dual Hume are on a par with them in my opinion.

And my last statement about the speed change when entering SA...it was my wife who quizzed me because she suddenly wondered why we were doing what felt like 60kph, she wondered if there were roadworks or something.

I agree with Ian, here. The Hume isn't as good as you seem to think.
I have driven it often. I used to work in Benalla and Wahgunyah and live the Melbourne end of the Hume..

hha, it does. . and nothing has really changed. the road is the same, the drivers are the same, the cars are the same but the artificial limit is reduced.

Actually, I reckon the road in SA is better. On the NT side there are more undulations while the SA side is a top road, in my opinion of course.

We are in the 21st century now, cars are easily capable of those speeds, people aren't driving old boats anymore.

Not everyone has to drive at 130, a lot of people do anyway, but the road, and the cars are good enough, a lot of the drivers that tackles those speeds on such a long road would be good enough as well. The idiot's don't even feel comfortable at 110, why would they speed up?

I agree with much you say, some cars, some roads, some drivers are able to safely travel at 130, but too many drivers lack the judgment.
Speed limits are not like high jump, where you keep raising the bar til it turns to crap.

if you have **** road, why are you posting in this topic, your road is never going to be capable for supporting 130, and hence never going to limited to 130, so why the interest.

to get to our destination quicker.
i have better things to do than drive for 10hours at 110 when i do 8.5 hours at 130.

that extra hour and a half is time i can be working on my car, seeing my partner, or sleeping.

driving between major cities isnt ego driven, its done for work, for holiday, for family, etc

OK , you win that one, but.... mate you were not in Europe, and for goodness sake ,you must have realised , our roads do not let you drive at European speeds. I feel you & all those who advocate those speeds for our roads, are being irresponsible. Ok for you, but for every young Aussie who dies on the roads if the speed limit is lifted, I will blame you , & your mates, Bob

I keep referring to the NSW section, the parts that could be 130km/h.

ive only been on the hume between sydney and wagga wagga. in my expert opinion, its more than capable for 130+
