Hi,
I have to repair a couple of leaks in the flexible hoses going to/from the gearbox cooler. Does it worth the hassle of having them repaired locally, or is it better to buy brand new ???

They are repairable, but by the time you get new hose & clamps and weld/braze barbs on the steel ends it's probably just as easy to get new.
Use new "O" rings if you reuse the old ends, new pipes will have the "O" rings supplied with them.
If the pipes are in need of repair, then it will likely start leaking in other spots as well. If I was in your position, I would replace them. It will give you peace of mind as well.

Depends where the leak or failure is, price the new genuine parts then get a quote from Pirtek/ Enzed. Most of the time if they are repaired they can use crew fittings meaning replacing just the hose section is easy/cheap and use braided hose.

With the engine oil cooler lines on Tdi's it's far, far cheaper to buy new genuine than repair.
I got the silver soldered push-on's fitted to existing pipe by ENZED. The crimped on originals do have a habit of leaking (changed mine twice before going to push-ons) so if you are planning to keep the car a while its probably better to go the Enzed route.
The top cooler line is a bugger to change at the gearbox end so the advantage of the push-ons if you only have to remove that section once and just replace the rubber hose if necessary. I carry a spare length of hose which I can easily replace if needs be when on a big trip.

Because I have to buy other bits and because of the 10% discount at LRDirect tomorrow, I might be going that way. I bought that car to use it until I finish the defender, so a bomb-proof repair is not in need. However, the post about the P38 cooler in the D1 was a nice discovery
